Improving Reading Comprehension Part 2: Weekly Class (7-9 Years)

This 6-session class is a follow-up to the popular 'Improving Reading Comprehension Part 1'. Students will continue to develop their reading comprehension skills which can be applied to all their future reading.

Class Experience

Throughout the course, we will be using extracts from the following texts:
'The Demon Headmaster' by Gillian Cross
'A Mouse Called Wolf' by Dick King-Smith
'Boy' by Roald Dahl
'The Black Queen' by Michael Morpurgo 
'Wind in The Willows' by Kenneth Grahame
'The Hundred Mile an Hour Dog' by Jeremy Strong

Session 1: Making Connections 
Making connections between the text and the students' own experiences, previous reading, and knowledge of the world in order to gain a greater understanding of the content. Identifying any unknown words and discovering their meanings.

Session 2: Retrieving Information
Answering questions like 'Who did...?', 'Where did...?', 'How did...?', 'What happened when...?' 

Session 3: Explaining
Answering questions like 'Who is your favourite character? Why?', 'Would you like to live in this setting? Why?/Why not?'

Session 4: Summarizing / Predicting
Identifying key words to summarize a text and making predictions beyond the text. 

Session 5: Inference
'Reading between the lines' to discover meaning which is implicit rather than explicit in a text.

Session 6: Consolidation of skills 
Students will apply all of the skills learned so far to further unseen texts.

Throughout the course, students will be taught the importance of questioning, discussing and researching the meaning of any unknown vocabulary.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to make personal connections with a text, retrieve information, explain their answers, summarize, make predictions and infer meaning. Students will increase their vocabulary knowledge.

Supply List
All reading material will be uploaded to the classroom by the teacher, prior to each class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
