Class Experience

This four-session course is designed to help students develop their planning skills while playing League of Legends. League of Legends offers many opportunities for planning in gameplay, such as character selection, item building, and banning enemy characters to benefit your game. Players who use these skills improve their chances of winning. Similarly, students who use these skills in everyday life improve their chances of succeeding in the everyday tasks they come across. This course is designed to help students recognize when they are using planning skills during the early phases of the game, such as character selection and item building. Together as a class, we will discuss how to work as a group to make a plan, how to use resources and knowledge to inform new plans, and how to transfer the planning skills we use in gameplay into everyday life.

Session 1: Introduction to League of Legends - Planning as a Team
Students will build their knowledge of League of Legends and will help plan out their experience for the rest of the course. Students will communicate with their teams, and begin the planning process before jumping into a game.

Session 2: Planning a Strategy for Yourself
There are many reasons every game of League of Legends is different. In this session, students will work towards building a strategy that has the most potential for success using the resources that they have on hand .

Session 3: Planning Based on the Opponent’s Team
Students will use the knowledge that they have obtained thus far to create a team-based plan to counter their opponents.

Session 4: Being Adaptable in a Plan During Gameplay
Students will use their knowledge of the enemy team, their awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses, and their relationships with their teammates to plan around the many of the moving parts of the game that will allow them to keep the upper hand.

Learning Goals

1. Students will be able to identify when they are using their planning skills while playing League of Legends.
2. Students will learn how to utilize their pre-planning skills in order to complete a complex task with the highest chance for success
3. Students will be able to think about how planning helped them succeed in games, and identify when planning can help them complete tasks successfully in everyday tasks.
4. Students will be able to discuss how to use “plans gone wrong” to make more successful plans in the future

LearningWorks for Kids (LW4K) views gameplay as a foundation for children’s learning. LW4K LIVE classes leverage children's attention, persistence, and love of gaming as tools for developing executive functioning, social-emotional, and academic skills used in and out of game play. Our teachers are expert gamers, trained in psychology and education with the goal of making game-based learning into real world skills. But playing games is not enough! We apply evidenced-based strategic teaching principles and the LW4K model of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” to make gameplay “Digitally Nutritious” and help students identify, think about, and then apply the skills they are practicing in gameplay to the real world.

While our classes are great fun, there is always a teaching component included. Typically we spend about 10 minutes at the beginning of class, talking, watching video, and strategizing about our targeted skill (e.g. Planning, Time Management, Organization, Flexibility, etc). During gameplay which takes up the remainder of the class, we apply the “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” strategies to promote real world learning. Your kids will have a blast playing video games with our teacher and learn skills that will help them at home, school, and in their daily activities.
