LearningWorks for Kids (LW4K) views gameplay as a foundation for children’s learning. LW4K LIVE classes leverage children's attention, persistence, and love of gaming as tools for developing executive functioning, social-emotional, and academic skills used in and out of game play. Our teachers are expert gamers, trained in psychology and education with the goal of making game-based learning into real world skills. But playing games is not enough! We apply evidenced-based strategic teaching principles and the LW4K model of “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” to make gameplay “Digitally Nutritious” and help students identify, think about, and then apply the skills they are practicing in gameplay to the real world.

While our classes are great fun, there is always a teaching component included. Typically we spend about 10 minutes at the beginning of class, talking, watching video, and strategizing about our targeted skill (e.g. Planning, Time Management, Organization, Flexibility, etc). During gameplay which takes up the remainder of the class, we apply the “Detect, Reflect, and Connect” strategies to promote real world learning. Your kids will have a blast playing video games with our teacher and learn skills that will help them at home, school, and in their daily activities.
Our dedicated, experienced Learning Works for Kids instructors always make sure that every session is just as enjoyable as it is educational. This course will be led by a member of our LearningWorks LIVE team. For more information about our team, please visit the "About Us" page on the LearningWorks for Kids website.
Session 1:
Students will explore different features of the game, and play a few rounds using different types of characters. With this activity, they will be able to plan what type of character they want to play as later.

Session 2:
Students will look at common, useful item builds within League of Legends using sites like https://app.mobalytics.gg/lol/summoner-search or https://www.metasrc.com/5v5 . Both sites are FREE to use. That information will help them create a plan for what items they want to build in our next round of game play.

Session 3:
Students will research the character that counter their character. Learn more about those champions and what it is about them that makes them difficult to play against.

Session 4:
Students are encouraged to reflect on the progress they have made during the class! Please look at our other class listings to see how you can continue to apply game-based skills to real-world situations!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses League of Legends, an online server game that can be accessed for free. Be sure to create a League of Legends account before class! Each student will need a working microphone and pair of headphones.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
League of Legends is rated T for Teen.
