Class Experience

Each week of this camp will be different, so students can enjoy multiple weeks!

Improvisational theater, or improv, is a technique used by famous actors and comedians to create funny and memorable scenes on the spot. In this class, learners will learn from a teacher trained at the famous Second City Theater whose alumni include famous actors and comedians like Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, and Mike Meyers. Students enrolled in this week-long camp will learn the same techniques that these successful performers use on stage, on television, and in movies. Each week of the camp will be different, so students who enroll in multiple weeks will experience different games, exercises and improv techniques.

Improv is a fun way to learn about theater, allowing students to focus on performance and creativity rather than memorizing lines. It's a great foundation for anyone who has an interest in acting or writing whether it's in comedy or drama. It's also a fun way to gain confidence and to improve public speaking.

In this course, we'll begin by playing theater games that teach the "yes, and" philosophy of improv. The idea of "yes, and" is to teach students to listen to their fellow improvisors and to support each other as they create scenes together. Over the course of the week, students will learn how to perform longer comedic scenes.
Learning Goals
By the end of the camp, students should be comfortable performing as part of an improv ensemble. This is a great foundation for anyone interested in doing more improv, theater, or comedy. Students will also learn the value of team work and collaboration, develop communication skills, and grow their self-confidence.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach classes related to comedy and humor including sketch comedy, improv, and satire writing.

I'm an improvisor, comedian, and writer who has written professionally for web series, comic strips, and satirical publications like McSweeney's. I've been fortunate to graduate from the Second City's renowned Conservatory Program. - with leading comedy actors and writers including Kevin McDonald of TV's The Kids in the Hall and the movie Lilo & Stitch.

I believe that comedy has the ability to improve skills like interpersonal communication and writing as well as boost students' confidence. Whether a learner is the "class clown" or someone who is a bit more quiet, I aim to create a learning environment where they can have fun, gain confidence and learn new skills.

I have a bachelor of arts degree and a master's degree in business.
