It doesn't matter if you've improvised a zillion times or if you're not even sure what comedy improv is. It doesn't matter if you've memorized scenes from "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" or if you've only seen your friends perform improv once. It doesn't matter if you're the class clown or if you feel kind of shy. Everyone can be funny. And everyone will laugh and learn together. We will play a silly warm up to remind ourselves to say "yes!" to every idea no matter how crazy. And, then we will learn and practice popular improvisational comedy games and exercises. Have a favorite? We would love to give it a shot. Through collaboration and always saying "YES" we will create hopefully amusing short scenes that will have their first performance and closing night all at the same time. Maybe each line starts with the next letter of the alphabet? Maybe you're a pirate and have to tell us what your favorite movie is and why? Or maybe you have to write a complaint letter with a new friend.....one word at a time. This class does it all.....from helping to build confidence speaking in front of others all the way to learning core acting skills like tactics and objectives. We build characters and work on using our voices, bodies, and imaginations to bring them to life! We'll always praise what works, and we'll always reflect on what we can do better. And, we will laugh. We will definitely laugh! NOTE: This course is ongoing. You are welcome to come or go at anytime. Each week will include a focus on a specific aspect of improvisation such as making offers, saying yes!, playing strong characters, space work and pantomime, etc. Favorite exercises will come back and new ones will be introduced. As we work together and get to know each other as a group, our improvisations will no doubt grow in strength. Did I mention how much we'll laugh?

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from UC San Diego
I have an MFA in Directing and a certificate in clowning and commedia dell'arte. I've participated in improv comedy and taught it at middle schools, high schools, and universities for years.
My favorite moment doing improv was at a high school where I planned with one of the students in advance to argue over one of the games at the Faculty/Student Improv Comedy Night. We kept bickering over the course of the event until he ultimately ran at me, tackled me, and we rolled into the orchestra pit. It became the stuff of legends. I never told anyone it was planned and, as far as I know, neither did he.
