Class Experience

Students will laugh during this hour long jump into the pool of improvisational comedy.

It doesn't matter if you've improvised a zillion times or if you're not even sure what comedy improv is.

It doesn't matter if you've memorized scenes from "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" or if you've only seen your friends perform improv once.

It doesn't matter if you're the class clown or if you feel kind of shy.

Everyone will laugh and learn together.

We will play a silly warm up to remind ourselves to say "yes!" to every idea no matter how crazy.

And, then we will learn and practice popular improvisational comedy games and exercises.

We'll always praise what works, and we'll always reflect on what we can do better.

And, we will laugh. We will definitely laugh!

NOTE: This course is repeatable. Some games will repeat and we can get better at them, but there's always something new to throw into the mix.

Did I mention how much we'll laugh?

Learning Goals

Students will learn and put into practice the rules of improvisation.

Students will learn how to focus and really listen to partners. They can expect to learn the principles of dramatic conflict.

Most importantly, they will learn to say "yes" and find how to add on to--and not reject--others' ideas.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Music or Theatre or Arts from UC San Diego
I have an MFA in Directing and a certificate in clowning and commedia dell'arte. I've participated in improv comedy and taught it at middle schools, high schools, and universities for years.

My favorite moment doing improv was at a high school where I planned with one of the students in advance to argue over one of the games at the Faculty/Student Improv Comedy Night. We kept bickering over the course of the event until he ultimately ran at me, tackled me, and we rolled into the orchestra pit. It became the stuff of legends. I never told anyone it was planned and, as far as I know, neither did he.

Feel free to read my full teaching bio and message me any questions!
