Class Experience

Welcome to Improv 101!

In this 6 week class, we will be covering a new improv skill every class to sharpen student's improv skills and performances. Every week, we will begin the class learning a new skill and then play improv games specific to that skill so students have the chance to implement the new technique into their performances. After playing the skill specific games, the remainder of class will be dedicated to playing other fun improv games of the students' choosing.

Below is an outline of the skills taught in this course. Students will also receive a handout each week with a breakdown of the skill.

Week 1: "Yes, And!"

"Yes, and!" is the golden rule of improv! Students will learn the importance of always saying "yes" to their scene partners and how saying "no" effects the scene. Students will also learn how to give new information in order to keep the scene going while keeping it fun and exciting.

Week 2: Trust

Improv games are typically performed with 2 or more actors at a time. Because one person cannot dictate every move of the scene, we must learn to trust our scene partner's suggestions while acting. It is important to learn how to let go of our exact idea of how the scene should go and just let the scene play out between the actors.

Week 3: Emotion

Expressing emotion is vitally important in all forms of theatre! The emotion behind your words tells the audience how you feel and impacts how the scene is to be performed.

Week 4: Pantomime

Pantomiming is the act of creating the illusion of reality by dealing with imaginary objects or situations. Pantomiming is used to imply weight, texture, size, and location to the audience. Because no props are used in improv, pantomiming is a necessary skill to know!

Week 5: Memory

Although improv is made up on the spot, there are some things you have to remember in order to keep the illusion of the scene going. For example, you place an imaginary glass of water on the table in the middle of a scene. Then you forgot about the table and walk right through it! We're going to learn tips and tricks on how to remember little details like this to keep a scene alive.

Week 6: The 7 Deadly Sins of Improv

Besides just outright saying "NO!" there are other ways to imply "no" in improv. We will learn what they are and how to avoid these "Deadly Sins of Improv" to keep our performances amazing!

Below is a list of improv games we will be playing throughout the course. We will play 3-4 of the games listed as well as other games to strengthen the skill learned that week.

Improv Games:
- What are you doing?
-The Memory Game
-Infomercials
-Story Time
-Penguin
-One Word Story
-Switch Game
-Yes Let's
-Yes And
-Scenes from a Hat
-World's Worst

I am so excited to be teaching this class! I have been taking improv classes for years and I am currently a level 2 improv student. I love that improv teaches you how to think on your feet and not overthink what you are doing while being a comic relief. Improv is so much fun and I cannot wait to play all these games with my students!

Learning Goals

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Catherine! :) It is so nice to meet you!

I love to teach! I have been a teacher for over 8 years teaching all ages (3-65+) how to swim, read, write, apply make up, and more. The past 2 years, I have been teaching English to students online. I love the online world of teaching and I am so excited to offer my expertise on Outschool!

I believe learning should be fun, exciting, and interactive so that is exactly what I like to bring to the classroom! My classes are engaging and interactive so my students and I can connect and have fun while learning. My philosophy is if the class is more fun, then the student will remember the lesson longer.

I have been a Make Up Artist for over 6 years doing make up for formals, parties, dances, and weddings. Make up is so much fun and can really accentuate your features helping you build confidence and feel beautiful. I want to teach those who are new to make up how easy and fun it can be and how to have achieve a flawless finish!

Besides make up and teaching, I love to travel! I have lived abroad for multiple months in France and the Philippines. I have also visited Ireland and Mexico with plans to explore Africa and more of Europe later this year. I also have a 15 pound cat named Sasha! I don't think she misses me while I'm off traveling (you know how cats are)... but I like to think she does!

I am so excited to be here and teach! See you in my classroom! :D
