Description

Class Experience

Through the characters of the book, learners will gain a better understanding of cultural and historical differences. Learners will identify and analyze literary and compositional aspects of the story. Learners will also have an opportunity to acquire insight as the main character overcomes difficult obstacles in reaching a seemingly impossible dream.
I have taught this book to my own children in the course of homeschooling. My bachelors degree was from a liberal arts college and I focused on literature, art and philosophy in the course of my studies. My graduate work required extensive reading, writing and research.
Each learner will be responsible for reading about 3 chapters of the book each week. Chapter size varies but is an average of 13 pages of medium size double-spaced print. Weekly handouts will be provided. These will vary in length as well. But they will offer opportunities to analyze and delve more deeply into the text. Time dedication would be approximately 2 hours per week. The first class will cover pre-reading the book and the first 3 chapters. The first handout will be available one week before the first class begins to allow time for completion.
The learner will need to obtain access to the required text for the four week course either by purchase or some other means. The current list price on-line for a paperback copy is $6.07.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Handouts may be submitted for assessment by the teacher. An overall grade may be provided upon request. But generally, the structure of the class gives the learner the opportunity to read the text, complete the worksheet(s), and then review the content each week during the class.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
The primary caregiver of the main character dies later in the book.
