Don't Just Read it...Live it! Play your way through English Literature: this course combines the rich literary tradition of Stevenson's book with the excitement of fully participatory role play for a unique on-going piratical experience.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
  • Students will be immerse in the 18th c world of Robert Lewis Stevenson's TREASURE ISLAND. Students will learn about the Age of Piracy (and may become one as well). Students will participate in the novel, interact with the characters, and possibly change the outcome through the Pillars of Adventure. Students will understand life in Late Stuart and Georgian Britain, especially in port cities such as Bristol, Portsmouth, and (of course) London. Students will work as a team of adventures solving problems with their combined critical thinking skills. Students will learn about life on board 18th c ships, perhaps even command their own vessel.

Details: Students are expected to either have read or to read TREASURE ISLAND as we progress through the class. There will be a brief intro to the class which will include highlights of the novel, however, the student is responsible for keeping up with the reading. Hopefully, the students is motivated, through improved role playing, to become as familiar with the novel and the time period as possible.

Details: Through the Pillars of Adventure students will earn experience points for clever ideas, role playing their PC and martial problem solving. This advancement or "leveling up" will mark their progress through the class as well as their understanding of the novel and time period.

Attached to the Outschool Treasure Island: D&D Immersion Experience page will be a pdf copy of Treasure Island, the Basic D&D rules, a fillable character sheet. Students must arrive with a #1 sense of adventure!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
This class is based upon a novel about pirates, while certain aspects of the novel will be redacted, it was a violent world in the early 18th century. There will be fantasy combat on land and aboard ship. While the students will visit taverns these will be present more as rough family restaurants rather than the scurvy dives they actually were.
