1 hour per week. Each of the 3 classes provides writing time so even if students do not find much time to write on their own, they will end the course with a good outline of their imagined kingdom. In my experience students will be excited to develop and expand their ideas after each class. I provide useful handouts that guide students to think about social, economic and cultural concepts that spur the imagination and support their writing.Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
In this 3-lesson writing camp you will invent your own imagined kingdom. Some call this process "worldbuilding". As a model for this process we look at JRR Tolkien, who created Middle Earth and developed an entire Elvish language before writing Lord of the Rings. This class is ideal for creating a new imaginative world from scratch and for giving your fantasy ideas a solid written outline. You will write and draw in each lesson and at the end of the course you will have a notebook filled with details of your imaginary world. A custom-designed handout for each class will guide you with clear examples and provide structure for getting started on each topic. NOTE: This course focuses on creating essential background details that establish a kingdom, such as geography, laws and rules, history and economics. We will not be writing about plot in class time but you can certainly write stories after each lesson based on your new inventions! Over three lessons you work out the details of your kingdom. 1. Geography: you create a map of your kingdoms with names, vegetation, climate and its natural resources. 2. Inhabitants: you develop the species, animal and plant life in your kingdom - and the roles of rulers, sages and skilled workers. 3. Culture and industry: you invent their language and cultural ideas. You pin down the food they eat and how they trade. Some of you might think about the technical advancements of your kingdom, possibly militaristic inventions or magic. At the end of the course your imagined kingdom is defined and outlined! You can now use your ideas to help you write a story set in your own unique world. Students can use the course to generate reference materials for a book, film, TV series or computer game. ** There is also a 5-day version of this class that runs during school holidays. Supply List
I provide useful writing guides for each topic we cover - you can print these handouts and use them during our classes. In addition each student benefits from having a notebook and blank paper for writing and drawing. We will be writing and drawing in each class so please bring different pens, pencils, colours, crayons, etc. You can make your own little booklet by folding 1-2 A3 sheets in half - this way you can keep all your kingdom notes and ideas in one place and you can also stick completed handouts into this booklet.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a qualified schoolteacher and teach English, German and French, fostering a curiosity about different cultures and ways of life. I have taken many school classes to explore historical sites around London, the city where I live and work, and ask students to consider how the past impacts modern life, and express their observations in writing. I am fascinated by royal myths and legends and spend many weekends exploring the city’s hidden corners and cultural landmarks and have invented several imagined worlds based on these artefacts.
I am also a trained artist and visual storyteller and bring historic facts alive through highlighting cultural details and drawing students into discussions. I encourage students to sharpen their analytical skills when they imagine a fantasy version of history and to create a consistent cultural and economic model as a foundation for their imagined kingdoms.
