Class experience

*Note: some courses are 4x in one week - and some run 1x over four weeks. You can choose which works best for your schedule, click on "Show all 4 meetings" for time details. In this 4-lesson course you will create a solid reference guide for your imagined kingdom. As a model for this process we look at JRR Tolkien, who created Middle Earth and developed an entire Elvish language before writing Lord of the Rings. This class is for creating a new imaginative world from scratch and for giving...

I am a qualified schoolteacher and teach English, German and French, fostering a curiosity about different cultures and ways of life. I have taken many school classes to explore historical sites around London, the city where I live and work, and ask students to consider how the past impacts modern life, and express their observations in writing. I am fascinated by royal myths and legends and spend many weekends exploring the city’s hidden corners and cultural landmarks and have invented several imagined worlds based on these artefacts. I am also a trained artist and visual storyteller and bring historic facts alive through highlighting cultural details and drawing students into discussions. I encourage students to sharpen their analytical skills when they imagine a fantasy version of history and to create a consistent cultural and economic model as a foundation for their imagined kingdoms.
Homework Offered
Each of the 4 classes provides writing time so even if students do not find much time to write on their own, they will end the course with a good outline of their imagined kingdom. In my experience students will be excited to develop and expand their ideas after each class. I provide worksheets that guide students to think about social, economic and cultural concepts that spur the imagination and support their writing. I might suggest tasks they can complete alone, for example I might recommend some research in between classes and encourage students to bring new visuals and concepts to lessons.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Each student benefits from having a notebook for writing and drawing. This helps to keep the kingdom writing organised in one place. In addition I provide templates you can print out and use during our lesson. We will be writing, drawing or adding cut-out pictures to our pages, so please bring different pens, pencils, colours, crayons, etc. to write and sketch with. You can make your own little booklet of 8 pages by folding two A3 sheet in half - you can then stick my worksheets into this booklet and aggregate all your ideas in one place.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
