In this one time class, we will read a poem that will inspire students to create a magical world where anything is possible. Students will enjoy creating their own version of the poem to share

In this one time class students will be engaged, excited and encouraged to create their own poem about a world where anything can happen! We will begin by looking at an example poem as a stimulus - this is a poem where raindrops fall upwards and the sun shines cold. Seasons are backwards and colours are topsy turvy! We will then have a selection of photographs including rainbows, planets and cars in the city to encourage students to use their own imagination, using structure to develop creativity. Students will have the opportunity to share ideas if they would like, and others can 'borrow' ideas for their own poems. There will be further images for those that prefer the structures support, but there will also be the opportunity for students to use their own ideas. The last part of the class will be using the ideas developed to create their own poems, following the pattern 'Imagine...' We will have a brief discussion on strategies to help with rhyme, but also how not all poems have to rhyme, and the choice is theirs! Finally there will be time for the children to read aloud their poem (if they want to) for us all to hear.
Learning Goals
Students will learn that they can be poets - they can use their imagination and make the world their own using creativity and the magic of poetry!
