In this 6 week course, students will have the opportunity to learn through games, creative notetaking adventures, and writing. Prior to writing, students will learn writing and grammar skills that correlate with each writing style. Time will be given in class to collect ideas, outline stories, and write. Students will also need to dedicate time outside of class to complete tasks. Students will interact with each other by sharing ideas, giving encouragement, and playing learning games. Week 1 and 2 Personification Writing does not need to be boring. We will make a toy come alive with personification. What does your toy do for fun? What scares your toy? Students will laugh as they share ideas with each other. After character development, we will work on setting up an organized story. We will play games to understand the importance of writing with details, plot twists, and failure. Writing for a purpose is essential to motivation. Students will read their stories to the class. Ideas of possible toys: Spiderman figurine, stuffed animal, slime, doll Week 3 and 4 Comics I never enjoyed writing comics until I started to research, How to Teach Writing through Comics. I was so excited that I added little sessions of comic writing into my writing classes. My students have come up with outrageously funny to deep-meaning comics. Comics include interjections, onomatopoeia, body language, reading facial expressions, and precise language. Students will have a choice between 3 free online comic strip makers or printables. First, we will practice reading for understanding. We will beef up our inferring skills and the skill of "reading" the pictures. Second, we will dive in and write. Comics aren't only great for increasing writing skills, social skills are also essential in understanding comics. How does that person feel? How do you know? What do you think that person is going to do next? What clues did you spot? Even though comics have fewer words than a typical story, students learn an incredible amount of skills. Week 5 and 6 Interview and Interviewed Students will create an imaginary creature. They will learn how to write open-ended interview questions. Then students will flip their imaginations as they answer the interview questions they wrote. Finally, students will bring it together to create a short article about the imaginary creature. We will focus on editing the most during these 2 weeks. Key editing areas include capitalization, complete sentences, and punctuation. -Returning student discount through the refund feature
