Class Experience

US Grade 2
Through the use of performance tasks, games, activities, interactive PowerPoints, and Google Slides presentations, learners are introduced to 2nd Grade Math and Reading/ELA skills in a fun and engaging way!

This is an ongoing class with skills taught in isolation. The classes will not build off of each other from week to week, so feel free to jump in on ANY WEEK and not feel "behind!" (*You may join or end classes at any time to accommodate your schedule.)

**Topics and material will cycle every 6 weeks.

Each Math class will begin with a math fluency “Fast Facts” game, where students will work toward increasing their Addition, Subtraction, and Intro. Multiplication facts.

Following our math facts review, we will practice the weekly math skill using the gradual release method- “I do, We do, You do.”

Week 1- Week of July 3: Place Value- Hundreds, Tens, & Ones (2.NBT.1 & 2.NBT.3)
    Week 2- Week of July 10: Skip Counting by 5, 10, and 100 (2.NBT.2) & Addition & Subtraction within 100 (2.OA. 2. & 2. NBT. 5)
Week 3- Week of July 17: Picture Graphs & Bar Graphs (2.MD.10)
Week 4- Week of July 24: Time (2.MD.7)
Week 5- Week of July 31: Money (2.MD.7)
Week 6- Week of Aug. 7: Intro to Multiplication- Repeated Addition & Arrays (2.OA. 3&4)

Our Reading/ ELA classes will cover a variety of Reading Literary and Informational skills.

     Week 1- Week of July 3: Ask and Answer Questions (2.RL.1 & 2.RI. 1)
Week 2- Week of July 10: Describing Characters in a Story (2. RL.3)
Week 3- Week of July 17: Recounting Stories (2.RL.2)
     Week 4- Week of July 24: Determining Main Topic/Idea (2.RI. 2)
Week 5- Week of July 31: Story Structure (2.RL.5)
Week 6- Week of Aug. 7: Unknown Words (2. RI.4)

I will encourage all learners to participate through the use of “Whole Brain Teaching,” (WBT). WBT is a style of teaching that incorporates body movement and lots of praise and positive reinforcement, thus increasing student engagement and motivation. After each learner has had multiple opportunities to participate and practice the weekly skill, we will end each lesson with a review and “Ticket Out the Door,” which will consist of students showcasing the weekly skills they’ve learned.

Together we will work to add more skills and strategies to our “Math & Reading Toolkits,” and increase our confidence and love of learning!
