I'm Making Dinner! Around the World Edition: Cooking Camp

In this four day camp, your learner will be making the family dinner every night! Sit back, relax and be prepared for your learner to be serving dinner to you for once!

Homework
1 hour per week. We will be preparing the meals together, but because of different time zones, you will be required to put the casseroles in the oven each evening in time for dinner. I will always let you know the temperature, as well as how long it should be in for and if there are any special cooking instructions (like covering the pan with foil).

Class Experience

Learners will prepare and serve four casserole meals throughout the week (Monday-Thursday) for the family, in this fun four day camp! We will be exploring foods from all over the world! Here is the menu for the week:
Monday: Let's start by going across the ocean over to Spain for some savory, flavorful Spanish Rice.
Tuesday:  We're making some good ole' American yummy, gooey, velvety, Mac and Cheese.
Wednesday: Next, we will be creating a casserole that everyone knows, the famous lasagna! That's right! We're going to Italy and creating a nice, layered, scrumptious lasagna! 
Thursday: Lastly, we're going to Germany and making an authentic German meal called Schinken Nudel Gratin, which is basically noodles, cheese and ham. 
The nice thing about casseroles, especially with Outschool, where we have people from all different time zones, is they can be prepared ahead of time and you just pop in the oven at a time that works for you! 

Please note: Although the class time says 1 hour, the class lengths will vary depending on the recipe. Please know that the class times will range from 40-70 minutes depending on the days. Thursday's lasagna will most likely take the longest to prepare. I also encourage the learners to ask questions and discuss what we are doing, which may also extend the time a little bit more. If your learner has a class following this class, please let me know beforehand! 

Please note: All transfers to another time must be done at least 24 hours before. Please ensure that the class time(s) works with your schedule.

By signing up for this class, you're automatically agreeing to this waiver and release for yourself/your ward.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Please know that the stove and oven will be used for these recipes throughout the week. I will be teaching basic stove and oven safety, however if you don't feel comfortable with your learner using them independently, please be there for assistance if they need it.
Supply List
The recipes will be posted in the classroom 1 week before we start, but here are the ingredients so that you can buy them in time.

Spanish Rice Ingredients:
1 pound lean ground beef
½ cup finely chopped onion
¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
1 (14.5 ounce) can canned tomatoes
1 cup water
¾ cup uncooked long grain rice
½ cup chile sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon brown sugar
½ teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 pinch ground black pepper
½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro


Mac and Cheese Ingredients:
12 oz dry macaroni
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup light cream (10-12%)
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
salt & pepper to taste
1 can condensed cream of cheddar soup optional 10.75oz
4 cups sharp cheddar
1/2 cup fresh parmesan cheese


Schinken Nudel Gratin Ingredients:
12-oz egg noodles, cooked
8-oz cooked ham, diced
2 cups heavy cream
2 eggs
1/4 tsp salt
1-1/2 tsp dried minced onion flakes
pinch of black pepper
pinch nutmeg
1 cup swiss cheese, shredded
1 cup white cheddar, shredded


Lasagna Ingredients:
Extra virgin olive oil
1 pound lean ground beef (chuck)
1/2 onion, diced (about 3/4 cup)
1/2 large bell pepper (green, red, or yellow), diced (about 3/4 cup)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 28-ounce can good quality tomato sauce
3 ounces (half a 6-oz can) tomato paste
1 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons chopped fresh oregano, or 2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (preferably flat leaf), packed
1 tablespoon Italian Seasoning
Pinch of garlic powder and/or garlic salt
1 tablespoon red or white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon to 1/4 cup sugar (to taste, optional)
Salt
1/2 lb dry lasagna noodles (requires 9 lasagna noodles - unbroken)
15 ounces Ricotta cheese
1 1/2 lb (24 ounces) Mozzarella cheese, grated or sliced
1/4 lb (4 ounces) freshly grated Parmesan cheese
