Is your student reading at a 1st grade level? This class is for them! In this class, students will develop their recognition of 1st-grade phonics patterns (for example: vowel teams like "oi" and "aw", like in the words "point, straw, moist"), develop automaticity with sight words, and develop fluency in reading. The class will follow the same structure each day to help students feel comfortable! The class will include: Introductions - Start with a get-to-know-you activity or game and review the rules of class. Review: - Quickly review sounds and sight words for this reading level Today's Spellings: - Students learn and practice new phonics patterns - Students learn and practice new sight words Reading: - Students read the story 2x through popcorn reading - The first read, students are focused on accuracy. If a mistake is made, the student is coached to correct it. - The second and third reads, students work on fluency and rate. After Reading: - Students discuss comprehension questions, using inferences and critical thinking skills

I will provide a PDF of the story for students to print out before class. It will be posted in the classroom the morning of class, so please be prepared to print before class.

Hello! My name is Gina Derm and I can't wait to teach your student reading!
I've spent the last 8 years using research-based teaching strategies in both the online and offline classroom. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education, a Kindergarten-through-5th-grade teaching license in the State of Colorado, and a TESOL certificate. I am also currently studying for a Masters degree in Education Policy.
In my classes, your student will share their ideas, give feedback on others' ideas, and develop their academic skills. Just like in my in-person classroom, students will feel supported and loved!
Whichever class your student attends, I am hoping to get to know them. I want to develop a trusting relationship and an understanding of their learning style/needs. I believe that all students want to be successful!
