Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner Level
This class meets twice for an hour and goes over the basics of map creation based on terrain and characters. Two downloadable mini guides are provided that cover drawing a variety of map elements.

During the scheduled class time, we will:

+ Learn the basic elements of a map and how to define terrain.
+ Learn how to draw various styles of mountains, water sources, structures, and other map elements.
+ Learn how to create your own unique symbols.
+ Learn how to visualize your world as if you are in it by using all of your senses.
+ Get free downloadable guides and learn to make zines in the process.

After the first class, students will gain access to two (2) downloadable one-page zines with a basic key to some of the symbols we will use. Download it and be thinking about the different places in your real environment - like terrain, structures, housing, natural resources - and what you will be including on your map.

I’m looking forward to drawing with you and I can’t wait to see what you create!

Not required, but I highly recommend taking my husband’s class for a more in-depth look at creating your own world from the ground up:

Class: “Creative Writing: World Building for Writing or Games”

*Please note that the times listed on my end are Eastern (EST). Drop me a note if you have concerns about time zone conflicts.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to lay the groundwork for building their own worlds that can be used for writing or gaming projects. They will learn world building skills as well as how to set the scene for their own unique storytelling projects. These techniques can be used in creating and publishing their own gaming modules as well as writing their own books. I also teach a basic one-shot Storyboarding 101 class that focuses on writing and walks students through the Heroes Journey more in-depth.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Having been a fiction writer for 38 years, I love creating worlds from the ground up. As a professional illustrator, having the ability to actual see the layout for what I’ve created adds depth and makes my stories richer. I can see my protagonist’s path, the road blocks they have to overcome, places to hide or for the perfect ambush, long traveled roads and new paths blazed. The more senses you can involve in a story, the deeper your reader is immersed, and I’m always up for a good adventure!
