Average rating:4.9Number of reviews:(360)
An exclusive watch party for IJC learners of all levels! Come join us in watching and commenting on three episodes or film segments in Japanese with or without subtitles. (For the record, "hanami" = "cherry blossom-viewing.")

Class experience

This class is taught in English.
+ Participants will have the opportunity to get to meet each other and connect over their common ground as Japanese students at varying levels of the IJC series.
+ Participants will get to ask questions, hear commentary, and chat about the Japanese language and culture we encounter in the show/film.
+ Participants will get to work on teams to show off their knowledge of Japanese anime, language, and culture.
Homework Offered
In order to fully participate in the watch party's viewings (and not just the Zoom-hosted meeting), please read and follow the instructions below. While I'll be happy to post these instructions and troubleshoot with folks in the chat box in Zoom during the meeting as well, I intend to start the viewing as soon as possible after starting--so it would be best to check off all these to-do's beforehand so as not to miss anything! INSTRUCTIONS 1. Sign up for this watch party! 2. Double-check that the episodes we will be viewing together are available in your region, and look for alternative ways of viewing them if not. 3. Get familiar with the apps and extensions we'll be using together, specifically Language Reactor and Kahoot (details under "Sources" below). 4. Show up on time to avoid missing any part of the show/film or other directions given during the meeting. 5. Direct message me at any point if you have any questions :)

All listed shows/films are for certain on Netflix in the North American region. Please check there first if you have a Netflix account to be sure you can view each one in your region. For those without a Netflix account, be sure to check Hulu, HBO Max, Crunchyroll, or Amazon Prime to list a few other potential platforms where show/film may also be hosted.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The episodes (or 20-minute film segments) we will watch together are listed below and have been selected for being more or less neutral of potentially sensitive content so that even younger participants can join us with their parents' peace of mind. That said, participants should watch as much or as little as is under the discretion of the parent. Please check special notes below for details about the particular segments of the films we'll be watching.

For more information on each of the films we will be viewing, please check out IMDB Parents Guide descriptions:

 + 1st Viewing: Drifting Home - PG

(*For the occasional appearance of alcohol and smoking)

Please also feel free to message me directly with any questions you have around any of the above!
Those who are using Chrome browsers to watch the show/film will be invited to explore, download, and utilize the Language Reactor extension (formerly called "Language Learning with Netflix"), a browser extension set up to help Netflix viewers learn languages through the use of dual subtitles, an auto-pausing feature, pronunciation assistance, and dictionary pop-up tools.

It's encouraged that learners and parents get familiar with the tool ahead of time by going to the following hosting site for it:

https://www.LanguageReactor.com/

Also, if you're planning to participate in the trivia tournament during the watch party, please take a quick moment right now to be sure you (1) have the Kahoot! mobile app on one of your devices or (2) are using a browser that will support Kahoot! games.

Details of both of these can be found in the articles below:
