Class Experience

Beginner Level
This course covers the Fix It! Grammar: Nose Tree (Level 1) grammar course by the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW).

This course section is specifically designed for learners with reading/writing struggles due to dyslexia or other reading/writing difficulties who have now had enough reading intervention to read at or above a grade 3 level (in the USA) and are looking for a structured and explicit grammar program, with a certified teacher who knows how to support students with literacy challenges.

Although the format and pacing is set with the above listed challenges in mind, anyone who is interested meeting for 45 minutes each week to work through IEW's Fix It! Grammar: Nose Tree (Level 1) is welcome to join.

NOTE: The age ranges for this class are higher than the recommended ages listed by IEW. This is because this class is specifically tailored for learners who have struggled with reading and/or writing due to dyslexia or other learning difficulties. IEW recommends that a learner work with source texts that are at or below their reading level. Please contact me if you have specific questions about your child's reading ability and we can find a best-fit class for them.

Learners with prior IEW experience are welcome to join this class; however, no prior experience with IEW's methods are required.

This class is often offered at the same time as one of IEW's theme-based books, or Structure and Style Year 1 Level A. This section has been created separately from my other theme-based courses to allow learners to register at a level appropriate for their individualized needs.

This course will consist of live group video sessions, 1 time per week, for 45 minutes. Each week, we will study up to 4 "days" of the book, uncovering and fixing grammar errors in 4 separate sentences, as time permits. If we do not have time to complete all 4 sentences, the remaining sentence(s) will be assigned for homework.

Each lesson will be structured with the following routine:

1. Learn It! - We will learn a new concept that the learner will practice this week and in future passages. Instructions for how to mark and fix the passage are included here.

2. Read It! - We will read the day's passage. Bolded vocabulary words that are unfamiliar will be looked up together using the Merriam-Webster Online dictionary. Learners are encouraged to maintain a list of vocabulary words and their definitions.

3. Mark It! - We will mark the passage using the guide at the top of the practice page.

4. Fix It! - We will correct the passage using the guide at the top of the daily practice page.

5. Rewrite It! - After marking, correcting, and discussing the passage together, learners will copy the corrected passage on the lines provided or onto a separate notebook.

The course syllabus is listed for each lesson; however, I will be responsive to the learner's needs and will make adjustments when necessary. For example, if we only get through one sentence on a new topic and need to spend some extra time on the concept, we will do that. On the other hand, if we are ready to move ahead to the next topic a bit earlier, we will do that too.

Our goal will be to have the entire Nose Tree story in the Level 1 IEW Fix It! Grammar course book completed by the end of the 30 weeks.

Learning Needs
This class is specifically tailored to learners who have struggled with reading and writing due to dyslexia or other reading/writing difficulties. Although the format and pacing is set with these challenges in mind, anyone can join.
Pre-Requisites
No prior grammar knowledge required. A learner needs to be able to read at a grade 3 USA level. If a learner has had prior Barton or other structured literacy tutoring, they must have completed Level 4 of the Barton program or equivalent.
Supply List
You will need to purchase the Fix It! Grammar: Nose Tree (Level 1) student book from IEW before the class begins:

https://iew.com/fix-it-grammar-level-1-nose-tree-student-book

I recommend also purchasing the portable walls and/or grammar writing cards. If it is your first time using IEW, the Teacher Manual may be handy if you would like to further support your child at home but this is optional.

During each class, your learner will need:
-Fix It! Grammar: Nose Tree Level 1 student book
-pen or pencil to write
-binder with blank or lined paper (for the copy work during the Rewrite It! step if they prefer to write on their own paper instead of using the student workbook pages)

If a student has dysgraphia, or trouble with fine motor difficulty and they would prefer to use technology for the Rewrite It! step, they can use their computer using any word processing app that they can type in that will save their work, such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
