IEW is a comprehensive writing program that focuses on 9 structural models of writing as well as stylistic techniques to enhance writing. The Even-numbered Units 1&2, 4 and 6 build together to enable a student to easily and concisely compose a well-organized essay. STUDENTS MUST BE FAMILIAR WITH IEW KEYWORD OUTLINING PRINCIPLES. This class will focus on Unit 6 structure. We start by using multiple sources for 1 topic and learning to FUSE our outline. Next, we will focus on larger texts,...
In Unit 6 students will summerize from multiple references building even further on the skill taught in Units 1,2 & 4. Creating Key Word Outlines for each source, Fusing Outlines into one Key Word Outline and writing 2-3 paragraph papers. For this course, we will focus on the IEW DECORATIONS for adding style to our papers. When finished with this coarse students will have learned an organized way to synthesize information and communicate it from their point of view.
I love IEW and what it does for young writers. I have used it will all 3 of my kids and each of them has completed the entire course 3 times. I have been actively teaching IEW in a classroom of 9-16 students for 6 years. It is my mission to make writing interactive and fun for my students.
2-4 hours a week depending on the student's abilities.
Must be able to submit papers in Google docs. Must be familiar with IEW Key Word Outlining Principles. (If you have not taken my one of my classes please indicate your experience or reach out if you have any questions)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students are welcome and encouraged to turn in their papers for feedback. IEW utilized a checklist method for clearly communicating what is expected for each paper. Students will be encouraged to follow the checklist. I will review papers and provide positive constructive feedback but will not award letter or percentage grades. The focus of the class in writing and the writing structure and style. I will not correct spelling and in-depth punctuation. However basic quality spelling and punctuation usage is expected but perfection is not required.
50 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
