2-4 hours per week. Students will have a writing assignment each week to practice what they learned in class and strengthen their writing skills. Students are encouraged to complete the assignment each week. The amount of time the assignments take will vary based on the student. Students should plan on spending 1-4 hours a week on the assignment. Each writing assignment will include three things that the student will need to turn in. 1. Key Word Outline (KWO) 2. IEW Checklist 3. Final Draft of their paper The student or the parent will need to know how to upload documents to share the KWO and checklist and use Google Docs to share papers.Assessment
As students submit their KWOs, checklists, and final drafts, I will review them to ensure the student is using and understanding the methods taught in class. In my capacity as the instructor, I will carefully examine each paper and furnish the student with beneficial and encouraging feedback. I won't be giving out letter or percentage grades, as the emphasis of this course lies in honing your writing abilities and enhancing your arrangement and approach. Although it is important to have a decent grasp of spelling and punctuation, grammar is not the focus of this class, so I will not be providing feedback on grammar and punctuation. The key to success is to keep writing and striving towards improvement.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
IEW Structure and Style method is a comprehensive learning model that utilizes nine structure models and several style techniques to help students become confident and competent writers. In class, we will read different source texts together and work through the different style and structure techniques. We will utilize activities and games to ensure the students have a strong understanding of the concepts they are learning. Students have the advantage of writing their papers at home, at their own pace, and sharing their work with their classmates during class time. As students share their writing in class, they will have the opportunity to receive constructive feedback while practicing their listening skills and giving feedback. The classroom will be a fun and supportive place where the students will enjoy learning together. My goal is to help students unlock their potential as writers in a comfortable and friendly environment. Students will learn the first five units of the Institute for Excellence in Writing Structure and Style technique. Weeks 1-4: Units 1 and 2 will introduce making notes and outlines and writing from notes. Students will learn how to create a key word outline and use their own words to write about a source text. Weeks 5-8: Unit 3 will introduce retelling narrative stories. Students will learn how to write short stories focusing on the key components: characters/setting, conflict, climax/resolution. Weeks 9-12: Unit 4 will introduce summarizing a reference. Students will learn to summarize information from a single source to write a report. Weeks 10-15: Unit 5 Writing from Pictures will introduce students to creative writing by using pictures to create their own inventive story. PLEASE NOTE: There is a required text for this course.
