1-2 hours per week. Students will be required to complete unfinished class assignments for homework. Multiple stories will be read, outlined, and rewritten with stylistic techniques. The final assignment must be typed double spaced time New Roman #12 font. Amount of time spent writing and rewriting a story will depend on the student. However, I estimate 1-2 hours a week working on a composition. Assignments are to be emailed to the teacher 2 days before class by 5pm CST. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE EVALUATED. **The student may require access to a printer.Assessment
Assessment of students assignments will consist of randomly selected compositions which will be reviewed by the teacher. The IEW composition checklist and/or six trait assessment for compositions will be utilized to evaluate student selected compositions. Letter grades will be provided for compositions selected for evaluation. ** If the parents of high school students would like an end of semester grade, please state so in a private email to the teacher. This yearlong class will be divided into two semesters (Fall and Spring). Students will enroll in Fall classes (Sept. – December) and Spring classes (January – April) of the current school year. The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) High School course is a Year 2 Level C yearlong 24 week (2 semester) writing class for high school students. This class will reinforce units taught in IEW Year 1 High School Level C. Students will continue to write various 1-5 paragraph compositions which will include IEW stylistic techniques (dress-ups, sentence openers, and decorations). Topics to be presented to students and discussed by the teacher are: Fall semester Unit 1 – 2 Note Making and Outline, Writing from Notes • Students will learn how to create a keyword outline (KWO) • Students will learn how to retell the story from the KWO • Students will learn IEW stylistic techniques Unit 3 Retelling Narrative Stories • Student will identify the important components of a fictional story • Students will rewrite a story from the story sequence chart • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Unit 4 Summarizing A Reference • Students will learn Unit 4 Summarizing a Reference structural model • Students will obtain information from a source which they deem interesting or important facts • Students will learn how to place the interesting/important facts in a KWO outline • Students will learn the topic-clincher rule • Students will write a report from the KWO Unit 5 Writing from Pictures • Students will learn to ask questions about pictures in order to obtain ideas for writing • Students will learn to write a KWO from three pictures • Students will learn to write a 3-paragraph story from the KWO • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Unit 6 Summarizing Multiple References • Students will learn Unit 6 Summarizing Multiple References structural model • Students will learn to write source outlines about a single topic from multiple references • Students will learn to write three fused outlines • Students will write a 3-paragraph report • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Spring Semester Unit 7 Inventive Writing • Students will review the Unit 7 Inventive Writing structural model • Students will learn the parts of the introduction and concluding paragraphs • Students will learn to write a KWO for three body paragraphs, an introduction, and a conclusion • Students will learn to write a 5-paragraph composition from the KWO Unit 8 Formal Essay Model • Students will review the Unit 8 Formal Essay structural model • Students will write a 6 or 7-paragraph essay Unit 9 Formal Critique • Students will review Unit 9 Formal Critique structural model • Students will write a 5-paragraph critique Miscellaneous Assignments • Write a 5-paragraph Response to Literature • Students will learn the TRIAC model Note: All final assignments must be typed doubled spaced, Times New Roman #12 font. Assignments must be emailed to the teacher 2 days before class. Assignments will have due dates. Late assignments will NOT be evaluated. Note 2: The Spring semester is for students who have completed the Fall semester units. Exception may be made if the student has had prior experience with IEW curriculum. The student writing sample will have to be reviewed by the teacher. Note 3: Each semester is a separate enrollment and cost.
