US Grade 6 - 8
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Join me for the second half of our yearlong course usingg IEW's "Following Narnia Volume 1: The Lion's Song" to become strong, confident writers. This is a great course for middle schoolers new to IEW as well as those who've used the IEW curriculum before. (If you would like to join me as we read through the Narnia series, you're welcome to join the flex classes at any time!) Each week we will have a history-based writing lesson focusing on a different writing topic. This includes a lesson in: * a specific subject and structure. * stylistic techniques to enhance your writing. * an introduction to new vocabulary words * writing practice. I am a huge fan of reinforcing concepts with gameplay so, if time allows, I often try to include some kind of activity to keep learners engaged and solidify what they're learning. *** Please note that this is a WRITING course. We are focusing on the writing structure and style during our meetings. *** Price breakdown: $15/class x 16 classes this semester.
Learning Goals
During the second sixteen weeks (semester two), learners will work through Units 6 through 9 of IEW's "Following Narnia: Vol 1" workbook.
Learners will also:
* Increase their vocabulary with new words presented weekly.
* Learn how to structure their writing.
* Get an opportunity to practice writing daily.

Parental Guidance
IEW is a wonderful writing program but, especially in the beginning, is best for those who have writing support at home. While the content is not the most important part of the program, being able to follow the directions and guidance supplied in class and in the workbooks is.
Gimkit, Blooket, and Kahoot! will be used for gameplay as an assessment tool in addition to what learners write in class. Please note that an account is not required. The game code will be sent to learners during class.
Google Suites products (Docs, Slides, Forms) will be used to present materials and submit writing assignments. Students are welcome to use the writing tool that best suits their needs and is approved by each family.

Bachelor's Degree in English from University of Tennessee - Knoxville
Hello, families!
My name is Melissa and I wanted to share a bit about myself and my background. I graduated from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville in 2004 with a degree in English and a concentration in Literature. Since then, I have actively worked as a content and copywriter for magazines, companies, agencies, blogs, and even authors as a ghostwriter. Literature and writing are two of my favorite things so when we decided to homeschool our children back in 2017, it was no surprise to anyone that I jumped right into the role of an English Language Arts teacher. I have now taught IEW online since 2018 as a registered instructor, in my own home, and as a part of homeschool co-ops.
As a teacher, I appreciate seeing students form their own thoughts and ideas and being able to communicate them to others expressively and intelligently. I also recognize the importance of giving students the tools and confidence to become incredibly strong writers without tears or frustration! Real learning happens when kids have fun, so I try incorporating engaging learning moments into my classes whenever possible. Whether we are working through the intricacies of creative writing, the methodical organizing of an essay, or enjoying the silliness of a children's short story, I cannot wait to take this journey alongside your child!
As a homeschooling mom, I understand and identify with the significance of creating a lifelong learning environment. I aim to promote a love of learning while offering a safe and fun environment. I cannot wait to share my knowledge and experience with your children!
Here's to an amazing year together!
Melissa
