What's included
1 live meeting
55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
This is a class on idioms which is a type of figurative language. Idioms are those funny phrases like "a fork in the road" which don't really mean what they say. In this class, we will read "The King Who Rained" by Fred Gwynne. We will discuss the meanings of the idioms presented in the book, and enjoy the humorous illustrations. Afterward, the students will be asked if they can generate any other idioms that they have heard. Finally, students will choose a favorite idiom to illustrate. Maribeth will use her experience as an artist to demonstrate how to draw cartoon expressions or objects that students request. *Note* This is a great class for ESOL students or reluctant readers who like to draw.
Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of commonly used idioms. Students will gain an appreciation for humor in figurative language.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I am Maribeth Ditmars. I am excited to be a part of Outschool! I have taught all subjects as an elementary school teacher for over 30 years. But I am also an author.(This is why I no longer teach full-time.) My children's book "The Bald-Headed Princess" is a middle reader chapter book for grades 3-6. It is about an 11-year-old who faces cancer. It is also an Accelerated Reader book. I love using it as a teaching tool because of the two major themes of friendship and overcoming adversity.
My other book "Christopher's Journey" is ideal for high-school-age students. It is the memoir of our teenage son whom we lost to cancer. It is sad, funny, and inspiring. Young adults will learn the value of cherishing their relationships.
As an experienced educator, I am very familiar with all of the comprehension skills required in order to become a successful learner.
Some of my favorite subjects that I have taught are reading, creative writing, and integrated art activities. I also enjoy creating thematic STEAM units. (Science Technology. Art, Math)
I am also an accomplished artist, having done t-shirt designs, murals, and caricature work. I enjoy doing drawing lessons related to historical events, but I have also done fun lessons such as how to draw the Grinch. I will be illustrating my next children's book.
I consider teaching to be my first calling. Connecting with creative young minds is both a joy and a privilege. My goal is the same with my writing. As often as possible, I use my sense of humor, and I encourage my students to do the same when it is appropriate.
Throughout my teaching career, I became known for my vast earring collection. I loved matching my ear-wear to the curriculum! If we were studying the rainforest, I accessorized accordingly with parrots, frogs, orchids, monkeys and other appropriate earrings. I soon earned the nickname "Ms. Frizzle" of Magic School Bus fame.
I look forward to matching my talents with the talents of the Outschool community.
