Class Experience

Students will learn (or review) eight literary devices through a dynamic and engaging conversation with their teacher. They will then work to identify those literary devices within the context of "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud", by: William Wordsworth. The literary devices are as follows: setting, theme, point of view, imagery, simile, metaphor, personification, and repetition for effect. Depending on how quickly the students grasp the literary devices, there will also be ample time to engage analytically with the text of the poem. We will focus on examining how the author differentiates between solitude and loneliness. Students will be asked to reflect on how this applies to their own lives. Colorful Powerpoint Slides will be used via Share Screen on Zoom to facilitate the lesson.
Learning Goals
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to...

-Understand the definitions of eight key literary devices.

-Identify examples of those eight literary devices within the context of a poem.

-Engage analytically with the text of that poem.

Teacher expertise and credentials
We do delve into social emotional content with a brief discussion about the difference between the presentation of solitude and the presentation of loneliness within the context of a poem at the end of the lesson. I will encourage the students to consider how they are trying to feel more of “the bliss of solitude” and less “lonely as a cloud” during the global pandemic. (The aforementioned quotations come from William Wordsworth's poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud", which we will be examining analytically during the lesson.) I have my Master's Degree in Education with a focus on School Counseling and Human Development. I often help students to process their emotions as they come up relationally when engaging analytically with texts within the context of English classes.
