Class Experience

Ice Skating Coloring / Drawing / Arts & Crafts in a Conversation Social Club.

In this social club (ongoing class) we will color, draw or do an art project while getting to know the other students in class in a safe manner. Each week we will gather for some socializing while completing an art project. This is part social, part project-based, and all fun! Join each week or pick and choose what works for you.

We will start off by getting to know each other. I will have a guided discussion with questions for each student to answer.
Questions might include, but not limited to:
- What are your favorite things that you like to do?
- What arts / crafts you like to do?
- What sports / activities do you like to do?

After a brief chat time, we'll color, draw or do an art project that will be based on ice skating. I'll post what supplies and printouts are needed at least 48 hours before the class begins. Supplies could include crayons, colored pencils, watercolors, gel pens, markers, #10 pencils with erasers, string, colored paper, scissors, ruler, glue, tape, pipe cleaners, etc. If you don't have the supplies you can always improvise. It's just a guide... not a requirement. Use whatever is handy. Some weeks may require printing out a template so access to a printer is helpful.

Please make sure students have a working video and audio. They will need both for this class.

This is an ongoing subscription class, which means:
-	Each week is an independent class. You pay for each week that you would like to join.
-	There is no start or end date, come and go as your schedule allows.
-	The projects for each week will be different but adhere to the class description.

Please note: Because children develop at different rates and a one size fits all approach is not always ideal, I offer this class in a variety of age ranges with overlap (ex. ages 4-7 and 7-11) allowing you to choose the ideal classroom environment for your student.

**If a spot becomes available, due to a student dropping, please take note of the classes that are left for the section. Students are welcome to join any time if a spot opens up. This is only a 9-week course, so it may be ending shortly. You can see how many classes are left under the times offered.**

****2021 Spring Schedule*****
SUNDAYS:
Week 1: March 21 - patterns
Week 2: March 28 - free form
--- skip this week for Easter ---
Week 3: April 11 - doodle
Week 4: April 18 - collage
Week 5: April 25 - dress design
Week 6: May 2 - free form
Week 7: May 9 - lettering / typography
Week 8: May 16 - colors
Week 9: May 23 - repetition

It is my hope that students will relate to each other through their art and realize that even though we are each unique, being different is ok... in fact being different is awesome!

I've always felt art was important. I have been "crafty" my whole life and realized early on that it always left me in a better mood than when I started. With the current “social distancing”, I feel we all need a creative outlet. We need to create our own happiness and when at all possible share that joy with others.

Learning Goals

Students will improve their ability to freely express themselves and work on their communication skills with peers. They'll have fun doing a new art project each week and get better at conversing and finding common ground with others. If they choose they can share and talk about their art project at the end of class.

How can I help you be your very best?

Hello! I'm Katie and I've been teaching and mentoring students aged 3-18 for over 25 years as a professional figure skating coach. With knowledge in a wide range of subjects, I blend learning with having fun. "It's my philosophy that kids learn the most when they are playing and having a good time. I'm excited to share my joy of learning a variety of subjects. Let's expand our horizons and have fun while we learn!"

My life skill classes are on a variety of topics including peer-pressure, self-esteem, time management, goal setting, and other life skills that inspire and empower kids to think for themselves, make good decisions and go for their dreams. I love teaching kids how to make good decisions, overcome fear and manage change so they can become the leaders of their own life!

• Who aspires to be confident and happy?
--- As parents we want our children to be happy and to walk in the world with their head high - how do we help them get that?

• Who aspires to think positively about themselves?
--- How amazing could you feel if daily your positive self-talk built you up and improved your confidence?

• Who aspires to learn how to handle fear, change or making a mistake?
--- Wouldn't it be great to know how to bust through your comfort zone, thrive through life's changes, and let your mistakes go?

• Who aspires to better navigate emotions such as stress, anxiety, or failure?
--- Where could you be if you trained your brain to look for success and what is possible on the good and the bad days?

• Who aspires to learn how to set goals?
--- What could you accomplish if you had an attitude of gratitude, a clear vision, and an action plan for your dream?

I promise to give kids the tools needed to develop confidence, create happiness, and success in their life!

Over the years of coaching ice skating, I've had multiple skaters pass all their US Figure Skating tests and also written numerous recommendation letters to help them with scholarships, admittance to colleges, and first jobs. Being available to help guide a young person to becoming an adult is a joy and I love helping them become independent!

I have a heart for students with varying abilities and special needs. I have one child, age 15, on the Autism Spectrum so I'm empathetic to different types of learners and have decades of experience working with all kinds of kids as they grow, mature, and evolve into young adults!

I'm an eclectic learner and love to learn! I have my TESOL certificate so I can teach English too. [Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages] There is immediate satisfaction to see the "light bulb go off" when someone gains the confidence to speak in English. I'm so lucky to witness this moment of joy so often!

My goal for every class is to create a warm and welcoming environment that cultivates a comfortable learning experience and encourages friendships. I believe each student has their own set of strengths that deserve to be acknowledged and built upon. My motto is "say yes!" The world is needing kindness and joy right now and I hope to bring both to every lesson I teach on Outschool.

In my free time, I love to care for my houseplants, knit, read, and shop at antique stores. I was a nationally competitive figure skater as a child and am a certified PSA (Professional Skaters Association) rated coach in group, moves, and ice dance having taught private and group ice skating lessons since 1996. I'm also a proud Jayhawk having graduated from the University of Kansas with a BS in Journalism. [Fun fact: I was the Baby Jay mascot - best job ever!]

I am excited that you are considering one of my classes. If you have questions or would like to request a class, please reach out to me! You can also follow my profile to be notified when I make new classes available!

See you soon in class!
:) Katie H.

*I ask that cameras be turned on for the entirety of class. If your child has a specific need to have their camera off please message me and I'm happy to discuss.

* Outschool records every class so that they can review class content as needed. It's my goal to create a safe space for all and for that reason I do not post class recordings to the Classroom page. If your child had to miss a scheduled class please message me and I'd be happy to share the recording with you.
