Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Not only will we study Maps via names & capitals of countries within the continents but also explore the unique cultures (Folklore, Food, Crafts, Celebrations, Daily Life, etc) of various world regions.

Consisting of teacher-led presentations, read-alouds, videos as well as active student discussion, this class is perfect for all types of students. Especially true for those who love or want to travel or for those who just want to get a feel of how another human their age goes about their day on the other side of the world. Learning about how others live and interact on a daily basis plus their customs and beliefs help individuals learn more about themselves and the values they hold near to their heart.

Students may be matched into small groups or partners for various in-class activities. Knowing and applying names/capitals to countries within that continent will be practiced at home with the application via Kahoot! in the class. Optional activities such as recipes and/or additional videos will be given for those that want to have some more fun learning about a location.

The class structure allows for varying learning styles, attention-spans, interests, and special needs. I believe in effort. Effort in trying, the process, curiosity, wonder, and thinking! These principles, along with kindness will be guides in our class discussions and activities.

During each class, students will learn about 4-6 areas within a specific continent and/or country--Maps, Overview, Daily Life, Folklore, Culture, and Fun Facts.

Maps: learning and applying the names of countries and/or cities for that location
Overview: general information of the location
Daily life: the way in which similar aged kids go about their day in that location
Folklore: usually a story that has been passed down through the generations that uphold that location's beliefs
Culture: includes food, crafts, fashion, celebrations, customs, and/ or games
Fun facts: any unique trivia type facts about the location

I am passionate about interest-led-learning. As an extensive world traveler and a person who loves to learn about other cultures, this class fits well into that passion. I have taught this class several times in my homeschooling community and the students are always sad when it comes to an end!

My experience is in over 8 years as an Elementary School Special Education Teacher, 5th-grade teacher, and Teacher-Librarian of K-5. Plus homeschooling both of my sons from middle school until high school graduation.

This class is perfect for all types of students, especially for those who love or want to travel or for those who just want to get a feel of how another kid their age goes about their day on the other side of the world. Learning about how others live and interact on a daily basis plus their customs and beliefs help individuals learn more about themselves and the values they hold near to their heart. The class structure allows for varying learning styles, attention-spans, interests, and special needs. I believe in effort. Effort in trying, the process, curiosity, wonder, and thinking!

As a continual learner (a person always thinking, wondering and asking WHY) -- I strive to inspire all of my students that same passion--to be curious-minded to the world around them. To be playful. To be passionate. To be Adventurous. To be a mistake maker. To be a learner who has no boundaries!
