"I Survived" Series by Lauren Tarshis Book Club

Class
"I Survived" books are a wonderful resource to use with students who are gaining independence with chapter books and who need work on sustaining reading comprehension over multiple chapters and improving reading strategies and skills.

Description

Class Experience

Each week we will read one book before class. During class, we will discuss the book from that week and complete activities together, which may include: mapping the location the book took place, write a first-hand account as a reporter sharing the breaking news, illustrate images related to the story, create a social media post from the perspective of the main character, research the event making a poster to inform others, generate questions to ask an actual survivor of the event, write to explain items they would bring with them if they were to time travel, write about anything new or interesting they learned, create a timeline of the event, and write a letter to the author describing what book should come out next in the series.
I have Bachelor's Degrees in Elementary Education and Psychology from Rowan University. I have 25 years of experience in the classroom ages 3-11. I have taught in public and private schools in the United States and I taught for 10 years at the International School of Hamburg in Germany. I have been on Outschool for several years. I am an avid reader. I especially love historical fiction. The preteen me would have loved this series of books. I am so excited to share them and discuss them with young readers! My son, a reluctant reader, devoured these books. They often led us to talk about the historic events included in them. Having lived in Germany for over ten years, but now living in a Jewish household "I Survived the Nazi Invasion, 1944" was an often discussed book in our household, helping us to understand history and find balance in our personal lives..
Each week, you will get a PDF to print for your child with activities we will complete in class. Your child may also need something to color, cut, and glue with for certain activities.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Per Common Sense Media.org

"Parents need to know that Lauren Tarshis's I Survived series is captivating, emotional, and historically accurate. The kids in these stories face scary situations in their first-person accounts of the disasters; they're often alone, hurt, and in an unfamiliar place. But because almost everyone around them is trying to help the kids survive or find their parent, once the worst is over, the overall feeling from the books is optimistic. The end of each story of survival gives a glimpse into the post-disaster life of the family and ends with an upbeat note."
