Class Experience

Students will learn the weather elements that are necessary to be an impetus for a tornado to form. Students will be introduced to the Fujita Tornado Damage Scale and how scientists use it to determine the strength of a tornado. Students will learn about "tornado alley" and be exposed to videos, pictures, and a first hand account of experiencing a tornado.
Students will also learn the advances that have been made due to scientific methods and tracking, in the areas of more warning time, and surviving an actual tornado.
There will be no homework involved in this class, unless the learner wants to follow up with reading, or researching more information on their own. Progress will be evaluated by an informal quiz after the 2nd class.

Parental Guidance
I would recommend this class to those students who are interested in extreme weather, how and why it forms, or have an interest in becoming a meteorologist. If you feel your child may get too anxious watching the footage or viewing actual pictures of various tornadoes, then you may want to sit in with them.
Supply List
Students will not need to purchase any materials for this class. I will provide informational sheets, facts, and websites for further research. The cost is $38 for 2 one hour classes. I look forward to sharing my information with your child(ren)!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
The main reason I'm offering this class is to expand on the preparedness being made available by local television stations and the Weather Channel, as this is the time of year when most tornadoes occur and a lot of new information being presented.
I did indeed survive an F3 tornado in 1976 , sitting in a classroom in the 10th grade as the tornado was witnessed to lift up right before hitting the school, yet lingering over the school before moving on and doing more damage. My entire town was destroyed, and I saw first hand the destruction of a mile wide tornado. Because of my personal experience, I believe the students will receive the information with more attentiveness and hopefully share their safety information with friends and families, or if they ever find themselves in the same situation.
Since the internet has made more things accessible, I have the original video that was aired on national television covering our tornado. I also have pictures from my yearbook, and other facts and stories.
