In this class, students will learn three strategies to help them stay engaged with and remember what they read. The three strategies we will learn are "#summaries," "But Why?," and "Connect the ...." For each strategy students will receive direct instruction as well as a model. They will then practice the skill with a short text and share responses with the class to get additional ideas of how to structure their responses. This practice will occur on the educational collaboration platform, Jamboard. Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to practice their active reading with a sample of a fiction text, informational text, and historical document. I welcome student discussion and questions throughout the session! At the end of the session, I will provide students with optional reading passages they can use to practice their active reading strategies. All reading excerpts and passages will be at a middle school (grades 7-8) level.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught ELA to middle and high school students in public schools for 10 years. Even strong students often struggle with remembering what they read. These simple strategies have been effective for below, on, and above grade level students that I have worked with in the past.
