Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Intermediate Level
This class will help you develop your English comprehension skills by introducing you to a variety of short stories. There will be a new story each week and the stories will be either fiction or interesting non-fiction. Being able to understand what is happening in a story is a key skill required in the SATs. In this class, we will read through the story together and then we will discuss what actually happened (so you will need to have your audio and cameras on so you can fully participate).
You will learn how to extract relevant information so that you can answer the questions, learn how to deduce what is meant when the story uses inference, be able to identify the key characters, find phrases or words that tell you about something particular in the story, give synonyms for certain words, be able to describe a character, think critically by learning how to reason why a character does what he/she/it does, give ideas of what may have happened previously or after the story takes place, find connectives, explain why the text is organised in the way it is, explain why some sentences are shorter than others, find powerful verbs, find amazing adjectives, deduce what words mean by using the text that surrounds those words, describe what kind of story you are reading (is it a traditional tale, a fantasy story, some other kind of fiction, or non-fiction).
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to extract relevant information from each story to be able to answer set questions. With a different story each week, over time, they will learn how to deduce what is meant when the story uses inference, be able to identify the key characters, find phrases or words that tell them about something particular in the story, give synonyms for certain words, be able to describe a character, identify alliteration, think critically by learning how to reason why a character does what he/she/it does, give ideas of what may have happened previously or after the story takes place, find connectives, explain why the text is organised in the way it is, explain why some sentences are shorter than others, find powerful verbs, find amazing adjectives, deduce what words mean by using the text that surrounds those words, and describe what kind of story they are reading - is it a traditional tale, a fantasy story, some other kind of fiction, or non-fiction?
