Objective: Students will learn skills in determining the meaning of unknown words using context clues. Students will be given sentences online with various unknown words. Some of these words may be nonsense words. They will be shown ways that writers explain the meaning of the word right in the sentence whether explicitly or implicitly. Students will need to be able to read at grade level. Homework will be to find an unknown word in a non-fiction library book and try to determine the meaning using context clues they have learned in the first class. These words should be just above their reading level. Students will be assessed through a mini-test at the end of the second class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am offering this class because content vocabulary can be difficult to determine the meaning. Students need to know ways in determining the meanings of unknown words in a text. This skill is tested on state testing as well as other tests given.
I struggled with this skill and wish I had learned context clues as a student. It would have saved me some grief in having to look up words in a dictionary (and not online).
