Class Experience
During the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous, 'I Have A Dream' speech, calling for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States. Spoken to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the speech was a defining moment of the civil rights movement and among the most iconic speeches in American history. Students will improve/strengthen their understanding of poetic devices and use Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic speech to reinforce the lesson.
Course educator, Morgan Jae, is a college-trained historian and educator with a passion for educating youth on the diverse aspects of Black history and culture. She has taught high school students across various subjects including AP Literature and AP Language, while also providing tutoring and supplemental education and instruction for high school history and sociology students. She also has extensive experience curating supplemental reading material for adult book clubs on the topics of Black history, culture, sociology and feminism.
There is no homework for this one time class.
Paper + Writing Utensil
There will be no formal assessment but student's will share their 'I Have A Dream' poem if they wish to.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will watch a portion of the 'I Have A Dream' speech, shared from the instructor's screen on screen-share mode.
