Description
Class Experience
This course is for all those budding pianists who don’t like practising scales! Any piano teacher will tell you that working on scales is an important part of developing and improving piano technique, but learning scales can seem tedious and boring. However, you certainly can’t escape them if you’re studying for a piano exam, and they come up in almost every type of music from classical to contemporary pop music. During this course you’ll be introduced to a fun (and relatively painless!) way...
Students will learn the correct way to play major and minor scales in a number of different keys up to 2 sharps and 2 flats, using transposed versions of passages from actual pieces of music by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. There will also be an introduction to the blues scales (ubiquitous in jazz and rock music), and common modal scales (aelian, dorian and mixolydian).
After each session, learners will be asked to consolidate the knowledge and skills presented in the live sessions by doing some practice each day between sessions. They will get most benefit if they can dedicate 10-15 minutes practice time to this activity per day.
All the required music copies will be provided in the form of pdf downloads.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No formal assessment will be applied, but learners will be invited to share what they can do within the class, in a non-threatening and encouraging way.
30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
