Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Have you recently welcomed a new dog or puppy into your home? You want to do what's best for your new friend, but it can be overwhelming with all the choices you have for food, toys, and equipment. In this class, we will learn about different foods for your dog, discuss age appropriate chews and toys, explore solutions to common behavior issues, and practice training skills with your dog or puppy.

In each class, we will spend half of the time exploring a different topic related to dogs and puppies. This will be done through lecture and discussion. The remainder of class time will be spent teaching your dog or puppy training skills.
NOTE - You will need to have your pet in the second half of class along with soft treats to aid in training.

WEEK ONE: Lecture topics - Useful equipment such as leash, collar, and harness. Benefits of crate training. Safe toys and chews. Boredom busters. Training skills - sit, down, name recognition and recall.

WEEK TWO: Lecture topics - Exploring different food choices. Appropriate treats. High and low value rewards. Maintenance grooming, nail care and baths. Training skills - Walking nicely on leash. Impulse control.

WEEK THREE: Lecture topics - Behavior issues such as rough play and excess barking, potty training, social skills. Training topics - Review of previous skills. Introduce stay, focus, and target training.

I have been owned by a dog my whole life. Currently I live on a farm with several dogs as well as other animals. I participate and actively compete in dog sports such as agility, rally, obedience, and barn hunt. The first agility trial I entered was over 20 years ago! My dogs have multiple awards and titles from several organizations and I am a judge in training for UKI dog shows. I pride myself in working with and being successful with the harder to train breeds. When I am not teaching, I work in a canine rehab center helping dogs through hydrotherapy and laser therapy.
