I Don't Know What to Do With My Feelings: Listen & Communicate Like a SuperHero!
Not listening, not hearing, and misunderstanding can create frustration and conflict (especially in close quarters); this class will help kids push past assumptions and train their brain to focus, listen, and gather accurate information.

I often lead conflict resolution workshops for teams and organizations--and more often than not we can trace "not listening" or miscommunication as the root cause. And why shouldn't it be? Listening is tricky! Between facial expression, tone of voice, body language, incorrect assumptions (and past experiences) there are MANY reasons listening, understanding, and communication can go off course. I created this class to help kids get a head start on a critical skill that will undoubtedly help...
Students will learn critical ways to be an actively engaged listener at home and at school. They will also learn how their past experiences can lead them to making incorrect assumptions and misunderstandings and how to avoid that "trap" in the future.
Why me? I taught conflict resolution workshops in cities across the U.S. for years, and the one topic that came up over and over was listening. As in, "my kids won't listen to me . . . my husband/ wife won't listen to me," etc. It really is one of the primary reasons we all experience conflict. What I noticed was that most everyone would say that "other people" have a listening problem, but that they considered themselves to be "above average" listeners. I loved teaching this part of the workshop because I could have some fun using my entertainment and public speaking background to test out what I call a "dramatic reenactment" of a few sentences, including facial expression, tone of voice, and body language. Without fail, the majority of the students would make incorrect assumptions about what was actually said--it's so easy to misunderstand, even when we're trying to listen! I love teaching this class because students can have fun learning about themselves and how to make small adjustments to gain big improvements that will ultimately lead to happier lives. A little of my background . . . I lead teams for Anheuser-Busch Entertainment Corporation for twenty-years before earning my first coaching certification and starting my own coaching and consulting company in 2006. In 2016 I earned my certification in applied positive psychology by dedicating more than 300 hours to the study of positive psychology research and application. In 2016 I launched my best-selling book, Practical Bliss: The busy person's guide to happiness, based on the research and my own personal journey to build a life of joy and meaning (a.k.a. Bliss), despite the odds. I'm so passionate about the benefits of practicing positive psychology and healthy communication, I now incorporate it into all my work with personal and professional development.
Students will be given handouts and recommendations to help them remember what was taught and how to continue to improve their listening skills.
1 file available upon enrollmentHandouts for the session will be provided.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be given the opportunity to "test out" their listening skills at the beginning of the class with a fun listening exercise to help them see where they may be able to improve their skills.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Students are encouraged to start asking clarifying questions when they don't understand or aren't sure if they "heard" accurately. You can help by giving positive feedback when you notice them trying out their new listening habits :)
