US Grade 3 - 5
Intermediate Level
In this class learners continue to write different types of paragraphs, such as descriptive, narrative, compare/contrast, and persuasive. They learn how to structure a paragraph, use appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and convey their ideas effectively. **Your learner does NOT need to complete part 1 of this class before participating in part 2! π¬ Here is what one Outschool parent had to say about her learner's progress after this class: "The class sessions with Ms. Stephanie have really helped a ton. It is so noticeable that it is kind of crazy! I took a look at what my son was able to write by himself for homework after this class and was blown away by his improvement." π£This class has a maximum of 6 learners so the teacher can provide extensive, specific, and individualized feedback after EVERY class to EVERY learner. Week 1: Draft Informational Paragraph Students will brainstorm topics that they know about and will use the hamburger method to write a topic sentence, 3 supporting details, and conclusion in graphic organizer. Write Informational Paragraph Students will learn how to write a paragraph, add in transition words, revise/edit their paragraph, and publish/share informational paragraphs. Week 2: Draft Opinion Paragraph Students will learn about opinion writing. Then they will choose a persuasive writing prompt, develop their Opinion (thesis), reasons, example, and restate their opinion (conclusion) using the OREO method. Write Opinion Paragraph Students will write their opinion paragraph, add in transition words, revise/edit their paragraph, and then publish/share opinion paragraphs. Week 3: Draft Compare/Contrast Paragraph Students will read and learn about compare/contrast paragraphs. They will decide on two topics to compare/contrast. They will begin filling out their venn diagram with similarities and differences of their two topics. Write Compare/Contrast Paragraph Students will write their compare/contrast paragraph, add in specific transition words, revise/edit, and then publish/share paragraphs! Week 4: Draft Short Story Realistic Narrative Students will learn what narrative writing is and the elements in narrative writing. They will then fill out their graphic organizer "Story Map" with characters, setting, important events, problem, and solution. Write Short Story Realistic Narrative Students will write their narrative, learn when to start new paragraphs, how to add in dialogue, and write their final copy. *Leaves of Learning Academy is an organization on Outschool with about 18 teachers. Occasionally, the teacher for this class may not be able to teach and a substitute teacher from the organization will take her place. Only teachers trained to teach this class will serve as a possible substitute for the class. A message will be posted in the Outschool classroom before the class takes place in the event a substitute will be teaching. I am happy to offer a refund to any learner who prefers not to attend the class with a substitute. Please send a message through Outschool in that event and I will issue a refund. Thank you! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Outschool policies regarding refunds for classes: β If your learner misses a class meeting, you are not entitled to a refund. Your teacher may, however, transfer your learner to another available section, or provide a class recording, at their discretion. β If your learner has not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the classβs start time, the meeting may be cancelled, at the teacherβs discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund. β Refunds are not guaranteed in the event that your learner misses a past or future class meeting due to a schedule conflict, and will depend on the class-specific refund policy. β If your learnerβs meeting time changes because of daylight saving time starting or ending for several world regions, you are not entitled to a refund if theyβre unable to attend. Please review your learnerβs schedule ahead of time to ensure you know when classes are meeting.
