This course will teach the learner how to turn their favorite thing to do into a "How To" book for their peers. By the end of the six weeks, students will learn how to write a "How To" book. They will learn how to edit, format, and design their book. They will know how to set up a publishing account on Amazon, design a book cover using Canva or Amazon book creator, PUBLISH their book, market it online, order a copy for themselves and share their book with the world! Students will also have the opportunity to purchase their own ISBN to ensure distribution in more places than Amazon.
Young writers need motivation, support, and resources to succeed in publishing a book. I've always enjoyed telling stories and writing. During my primary school age, I especially loved it when others listened to or read the stories I wrote. Unfortunately, I lack the information and resources needed to expand my audience. Family and friends were great, but I wanted to reach strangers too. It wasn't until the age of 26 when I gained the confidence to journey into the world of published authors. I had my first book published in 2012 and went on to publish three more after that. I want the learners to know; it doesn't have to take that long. Young writers can write the book or books of their dreams and publish for the world to read. Education: B.Ed. Experience: Taught English Language Arts to 4th & 5th, 9th-11th grade, publisher, writing coach, and published author.
Learners will need to have a prepared writing space in a quiet area as they will spend several hours a week writing. Having a notepad whether physical or digital will help with keeping track of the family details. This experience will be a great accomplishment and a milestone for the learner with having their book available to purchase worldwide. To have their book published by the end of the class they must have access to the resources, time, and a will to write.
Students will need: -Microsoft Word -Time, I suggest 2-3 hours a day writing or taking notes. -Access to Amazon, it is free! -Access to Canva -Access to Grammarly, the free version will provide assistance with spelling and punctuation errors. -Epic Books -Textbook: I Can Write About How To by Bobbie Kalman. Students will be assigned the book using EPIC BOOK or they can use the templates I'll provide.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Parents or grandparents will give an honest review of the book.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Jamboard, Word Hippo, Grammarly, Epic Books (Textbook will be here), Canva, and Amazon
