Class Experience

In this ongoing course, students will learn sight words (or high frequency words) in order to help them with their reading and writing skills. Each class, we will focus on one sight word by reading different patterned sentences using that word. Students will get an idea of how to use the sight word and how to spell it. 

Students will practice tracing the word, and then they will write their own sentence using the word. I will model examples that students can use or they can create their own sentence with help from me. As a former kindergarten teacher (now 1st grade), I know that kids need repetition reading and writing a sight word in order to memorize it. In this course, students will have access to sight words in multiple ways. Each week, we will also review the sight words previously taught.

This class will be beneficial for kids ready for TK students, current kindergarteners, or first graders who need practice reviewing their sight words.

Each class will be structured like this:

-Introductions
-Practice previously taught sight words
-New sight word
-Sight word song
-PowerPoint with pictures and sentences using the sight word
-Tracing and writing the sight word
-Reading, tracing sentences, and coloring (if time) our sight word reader
-Drawing a picture and writing our own sentence using the sight word
-Sharing our pictures and sentences

This course in ongoing which means that it will happen twice a week. Once you sign up and subscribe, you are charged each week. If you do not wish to continue the course, you need to cancel your subscription.

Supply List

Students will need to print out the sight word reader each week (it will be posted in the classroom before class starts).
They will also need:
- a pencil
- an eraser 
 -yellow crayon, marker, or highlighter
- colored pencils, crayons, or markers

External Resources

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Hi!

My name is Catherine. I am married; I have a dog, and I am a mom to a two year old boy, and a 4 month old boy. I am a first grade teacher in a job sharing position. I have been teaching for 8 years, and I have taught students in grades kindergarten through 6th grade. I have my Bachelor's Degree, my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, and my Master's Degree in Education. 

I love teaching online and am able to create a safe and interesting atmosphere for learning in my virtual classroom! I teach all types of classes. I really enjoy teaching phonics and reading, social and emotional learning, art and yoga!

For the past two years at my school, we have been focusing on student social and emotional learning. I love helping kids understand their feelings and manage their emotions. 

FUN FACT: I taught the yoga elective at my elementary school. I used to dislike yoga and stretching because I was extremely inflexible. I failed my physical fitness test in 5th grade because I couldn't touch my toes. It wasn't until college when I decided to give yoga another chance. I found that I became more flexible by moving from pose to pose rather than just holding one pose. Through yoga, I found strength, increased flexibility, focus, and calmness. And I am happy to report that I can now touch my toes! :) I hope I can help your child gain confidence in their yoga practice by meeting them at all levels and having fun!
