Class Experience

This multi-day course offers the same learning technique as my already successful 'Play That Tune' one-time classes and seeks to introduce beginners to playing the recorder. Learners on this course do not need any prior knowledge of playing the recorder. The course will build in difficulty each week and is designed to teach learners to play notes on the recorder and play 6 traditional tunes in a fun, relaxed environment. This is a fun introduction to playing recorder and aims to get children playing and enjoying music quickly.
This course does not seek to teach learners to read music or learn theory, check out my other courses for this.

Learners are shown how to play through a combination of watching teacher and a colourful presentation including clear pictures and instruction on how to hold and place fingers to play the notes.

After each class the presentation will be sent to the learner so they can practice daily through the week.

Week one will start by learning how to correctly hold the recorder. Then learners will learn correct blowing and tonguing techniques. Finally they will learn their first three notes. The first tune will use just these three notes.

Each following week will introduce one or two new notes a week and a new tune each week, gradually building in difficulty. Every week will include a Q&A on any problems learners are having with their playing, a quick review of the previous week, and games to help build technique and confidence in playing.

Tunes will include:
Hot Cross Buns
Rain rain go away
Twinkle twinkle little star
A peanut sat
Happy Birthday
Old Macdonald had a farm

By the end of this course the learner will be able to 8 notes, this will enable them to play with music, creating their own tunes or attempting to play other songs they hear.

Learning Goals

This course will give your learner an introduction to playing music on the recorder in a fun informal way using colourful presentations and pictures. By week 6 learners will be able to play at least 8 notes and if they have practiced between lessons they should be able to play 6 tunes.

Supply List
A recorder is essential for this class. If you don't already have a recorder they can be inexpensively purchased online, from music stores and from some toy stores.
The presentation will be sent as a PDF after class, it would be useful to be able to print it but not essential.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been learning and playing music since I was a small girl. I play piano, flute, saxophone, guitar and of course the recorder. I have played in bands and have also worked in a recording studio where I frequently played on backing tracks for singers. I have taught in English secondary schools for many years covering a wide range of subjects but specialising in music.
I have several successful recorder classes here on Outschool including one-time classes using the same method used in this course and theory classes.
