Does your child like to learn things in unique ways? Would you like your child to learn the names of the 50 United States? Come to my classroom where we will use mnemonic devices to learn US states. I will use google slides to demonstrate different mnemonic devised to help them memorize the names of different states. Students will learn different mnemonic devised to help them remember the names of different states. We will be learning a few states each week and I will provide a printable worksheet for students to fill out for future review. At the end of the class, we will play a short fun Kahoot game to assess what states they learned and which states they need to review. There is no prior knowledge needed for this class and you can join at any time. Here is a list of the state we will review for our class: week 1 California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Kansas. week 2: Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, California, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. week 3: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Arkansas, Michigan, Tennessee, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. week 4: Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia. week 5: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. week 6: Alaska, Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington D.C (also discussing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans). This class does require the download of a separate free app, Kahoot, which you can download to your phone or iPad. Kahoot is a free student-response tool for administering quizzes; we will be using it as a game show. To make this class fun and exciting your child will need two devices; one for zoom and one for Kahoot. Please make sure you do this before the class starts. It is recommended each student have both Zoom and Kahoot open during this lesson, therefore, having a second device (such as a cell phone or tablet) for Kahoot will give your child the best experience possible. *If one of the scheduled times does not work for you I do offer this class as a 7-week flex course. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome to my class. My name is Teacher Wendy. I have worked in education for over ten years including substitute teaching and as an intervention specialist. I have been teaching online for over six years; I am certified in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have an A.A. in History at Austin Community College and a B.A. in History, with a minor in English at Texas State University. I am a homeschool mom to three kids, two are differently-abled. I have struggled with dyslexia my whole life and I know personally how hard it can be to learn simple things that others take for granted. It is my personal mission to help people like me that are differently-abled learners.
I am most passionate about teaching tween students, however, I love teaching anyone with a heart to learn. When I am teaching tweens I find it’s best to be authentically interested and curious about their ideas, feelings, and experiences. Actively and purposefully listening to what they share gives me a better idea of how to support them. I prefer teaching skills through a multisensory approach and I live for those moments when a student's "light bulb goes off". Learning doesn't have to be boring, and by incorporating a little fun and lots of silliness, learning can be fantastic! I really enjoy educating tweens and entertaining, I call it edge-uh-tain. I like to incorporate positive encouragement and praise to assist my students and help with class management. Won't you join me on this wonderful and whimsical ride? I hope to see you in my classroom!
