I Am Unique! Celebrating Our Differences
What's included
2 live meetings
1 in-class hoursClass Experience
We will discuss how each person is unique, yet on the inside we all have similar feelings and needs. The M&M candy will be used to discuss that even though they are the different on the outside, the inside is still the same. (The students do not have to have these, but they are welcome to have some, and then eat them in class.) They will describe themselves in a poem using descriptions from nature and other sources. We will do a few examples together, and I will give suggestions on how they can find the words that fit them. They will use similes and metaphors. Students will describe their physical characteristics, as well as other characteristics. Students will be given the format to use and instructions on how to do the exercise and answer questions. Before the 2nd class, each student will finish their poem. They can illustrate or add pictures if they wish. They will be encouraged to share with the group if they feel comfortable. The group will discuss some of feelings they had when they were completing the project. No required experience or knowledge is needed. Session 1: Class will discuss how we all share common needs and feelings, no matter how we look. We will relate how M&Ms look different on the outside, they still all taste the same and have the same inside. Class will go over how we can describe out selves using similes and metaphors linking their physical characteristics to nature or food. The format of the poem will be discussed. There will be examples given and students can brainstorm with each other. Session 2: Before class students will compose a poem based on these insights. They will post to the classroom and if they wish, they will share with with the class. We will discuss the finished products. We will also talk about how they feel about the process.
Learning Goals
Students will identify unique characteristics that they have. Students will realize how our differences make us special and to appreciate special qualities in themselves and others.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
There are a lot of questions about diversity in today's society. This class is not about talking about racism, but rather focusing on how each person is unique. The topic may come up, and we will try to keep the focus on the objective, but validate any feelings that they have.
Supply List
If available, students have a few m&m candies of multiple colors. Does not have to have, nor do they have to have a lot. They can also be peanut m&ms. Students can use computer/IPad or pencil/paper to complete the activity. A mirror or a picture of themselves would be helpful as they complete the assignment. I will post examples and the format after the first session.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
