I Am Important and Unique!
In this one time class, student will read a book, discuss their unique qualities, and write an "I AM" poem about what makes them important and unique.

In this class, students will be taught how to find the main idea and details of a given topic. Students will also identify unique traits about themselves that make them special, unique, and important. Topics that will be covered will be reading comprehension, main idea, theme, the importance of recognizing positive character traits, human perspectives, the senses, and creative writing. Students will participate in reading "The Important Book" together. The class will read and discuss elements of the book, including what makes the qualities about the objects unique. The students will then brainstorm unique traits and qualities about themselves. This can include sports, art, music, reading, hobbies, and family etc. Students will write down their top three traits that make them unique and important. From that list, they will choose the one that is the most important to them. A model of the poem will be displayed to students to guide instruction. Students will participate in a shared group write to demonstrate how to write the poem. Finally, students will write an "I Am" poem that reflects their chosen trait. If time permits, students can share their poems with the class. Students will be engaged and interact in discussions, share ideas, and give feedback to each other. My teaching style is fun, energetic, and engaging. I encourage collaborative and independent thinking as well as higher level questioning and thinking strategies. There is no required experience or knowledge needed.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify the main idea, as well as how to analyze what makes them unique and important. Students will think creatively and independently. They will also use their senses and observations to write a poem based on their perspectives and important qualities about themselves.
