Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
The curriculum for this class follows after my writing class, I Can Write A Sentence! For Younger Beginning Writers. This is the next level after learning to write a complete sentence. This class is designed for children who are able to read and write sight words, have solid knowledge of all letters sounds and are able to write one sentence independently. We will be learning how to expand one sentence to more than one sentence by adding details. This is a Kindergarten level writing class.

Come join me for a fun and engaging writing class taught by a certified Elementary Education teacher! My goal is for all children to love writing and for them to feel successful! I will encourage and praise all learners throughout the class!

Each class we will have a topic that we will write about together. It will usually be an animal, vehicle, or place. If your child has a favorite topic please let me know and I will add it to the curriculum for us to write about!

During each class, I will model writing and we will move through the steps of the writing process together to write two or more sentences together. Before we begin writing, we will plan our writing together so every child has an idea to contribute to our story. We will learn about adding adjectives and details to our writing during this writing step. We will learn how to expand our ideas to write two complete sentences.

Then we will write the sentences together talking about how sentences begin with capital letters, writing each word together, putting spaces between the words, and ending with an ending punctuation mark. During this writing step, we will work together to stretch words so we can hear the individual sounds in the words as we write them. We will learn about vowels, digraphs, diphthongs, syllables, phonics, spelling rules, sight words and much more!

Then, we will edit our sentences together. We will check our sentences to make sure we put capital letters at the beginning of sentences, spaces between words, and punctuation at the end of sentences.

We will illustrate our sentences. Please make sure your child has paper, something to write with, and something to color with such as markers, crayons, or colored pencils.

At the end of each class, each child will have an opportunity to share their writing with the class!

If you have any questions please let me know! I would love to meet your child!!!

Hi! I love to teach preschool and early elementary classes and strive for ways to make learning fun and exciting! It is my goal to celebrate all learners and help them to love learning. Teaching phonics, reading, writing and math skills are my absolute favorite!

I graduated from Hiram College in Ohio with a BA in Elementary Education and a Reading Endorsement which means that I did extra course work so I could become a reading specialist if I chose. After college, I taught kindergarten, 1st and 3rd grade for a total of 8 years. During that time, I was honored to be selected as Teacher of the Year for my elementary school and finalist for county wide Teacher of the Year in Nashville, TN. In addition to teaching, I was also a curriculum developer and workshop presenter for 5 years. I created reading, writing, and math curriculum for the county, and then trained elementary teachers K-5 how to teach that curriculum in their classrooms. I also worked for a publishing company developing reading and math units. I stayed home with my children when they were young and then taught a transition to kindergarten class for 6 years.

I love teaching children and believe that learning should be fun and engaging! Children learn best when they are laughing, smiling, singing, drawing, doing hands-on activities, moving, and having fun! For me, there is no greater joy than helping a child grow and learn! I love to play games, sing and make learning fun!

One fun fact about me is that I love animals and have many stuffed animals. My stuffed animals love to join me in my classes. If your learner has a special stuffed animal we would love to have it join us too!
