Human Body & Health Series: Skeletal and Muscle

In this hands on and interractive 4 week course, kids will learn about the skeletal system, types of musles in the body, create hands-on projects, AND apply what they learned by taking part in exercise and creating an exercise routine!

Description

Class Experience

Students will be able to identify major muscles and bones in the human body, understand their function, and different types. They will also be able to apply their knowledge and create a resistence workout, and know the difference between a repetition and set. They will understand how exercise applies to the bones and muscles in our body.
I have years of experience as a group exercise instructor, personal trainer, nutritionalist, and youth fitness instructor.  I have experience directing youth fitness programs and also years of experience in the public school system as a special education teacher and worked in all content areas.  I am a licensed math and special education teacher. 
Kids will have a weekly challenge in the form of a project to do for the remainder of the week, every week.

Diagram Packet (will be provided in classroom) Week 1: clay (white, any type to make the skeletal system) and black cardstock, cardboard or construction paper, colored pencils, Skeletal System Labeled page (in classroom for download), Skeletal System Unlabeled (in classroom for dowload), Skeletal Research Page (in classroom for download) Week 2: small/average size balloon, Cardstock or regular paper, String at least 15 inches long, Bowl (small/normal size, NOT a large mixing bowl), Tape Week 3: Free weights (5-8 lbs or cans of food or bottles of water if no free weights) Week 4: Free weights 3-8 lbs, Workout Card (will be provided in classroom)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal Assessement- discussion and performance
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Kids will be taking part in exercise. If there are any health issues or limitations, it is required that they inform the instructor and have approval from a physician at their own discretion. 

Students need an open workout space free of trip hazards, proper footwear, and water. As a class, we will take part in a warm up and stretch to prepare our body. There is always a risk of injury during physical activity.  We will discuss and model proper form, but parents should supervise children for proper application of these skills during class.
youtube videos and a diagram packet will be used in class for instruction and references.
