In this 6 week course, students will focus on utilizing different mediums (ex. play doh, pasta) in order to explore and learn about anatomy in an engaging and hands on manner.

Description

Class Experience

Students will work towards gaining confidence, understanding and efficiency in introductory anatomy skills. Each week will focus on different, age appropriate anatomy skills as students work improving their abilities in topics such as understanding the how the heart and lungs function, why we have a spinal cord and how does food travel through our digestive system. As the topic addressed will change each week, the learning goal for each week will vary slightly based on the specific topic however, in general the learning goals of each class include gaining confidence and understanding in these introductory anatomy concepts. 
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology, honors specialization in fitness and exercise prescription as well as a masters of health science.  Additionally, I have had significant experience teaching preschool and elementary math and science to children as a traditional and non-traditional educator, both in group and private tutoring settings. 
Students will not be assigned homework however, students will be encouraged to review material taught and continue have related discussions to further enhance their science skills and understanding outside of class time as well as finish any worksheets they are unable to complete during class! 
Students will require a pencil and coloured pencils, crayons or markers for each session. Handouts and specific materials will be posted the Sunday evening prior to class in the classroom to be printed and brought to class. Each week a message will be posted in classroom with a reminder about the handout(s) for the week as well as if any additional materials are needed. 
In general participants can expect to need the following items: play-doh, pipe cleaner or string, beads or cereal, paper, markers/crayons, dried pasta
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed on an ongoing basis throughout each individual class. In doing so this will enable me to evaluate the level each learner is at and be able to alter lessons as we go in order to ensure each child has the appropriate level of understanding in addition to getting the most out of each class. 
Informal evaluation will occur through asking questions and prompting students to respond. Student responses during activities and games as well as through checks for understanding throughout each class will also make of components of informal assessments. 
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please note that anatomy will be discussed at an age appropriate level and only system directly related to major body functions, ex. walking, talking, breathing, eating will be discussed at this level. We will not be discussing or learning about the reproductive systems in this course.
