Class Experience
HTML and CSS are commonly used for creating web pages alongside JavaScript. HTML is used to create the structure of the content, and CSS is used to style and layout web pages. In this 6 week class for the age group 10-12, students will learn about basic coding skills in HTML and CSS. There will be sessions once a week, each lesson is 60 minutes long. This course is recommended for beginners, however, everyone is welcome. I will use Replit to show some applications and we will also code together in Replit. I am going to use lots of coding examples during the class. We will play some simple games (also using JavaScript). I keep the difficulty level easy. Week 1 - Students will learn about the basic structure of HTML: html, head, body tags. Block elements like headings and paragraphs will be used to create a simple page. Inline CSS will be introduced: An inline style may be used to apply a unique style for a single element. Week 2 - Students can review block elements and give them unique styling like the color or the size of the text. Internal CSS will be introduced: The internal style is defined inside the head section. I also show how to create a border around an element. Week 3 - They will learn about the div tag which defines a section in an HTML document. They also learn about the anchor tag which defines a hyperlink, which is used to link from one page to another. Week 4 - We will draw some rectangles using the div tag and having some styling. The box model will be introduced. Students learn how to use the id and the class attributes to style elements. They also learn how to add an image to a web page. Week 5 - Ordered and unordered lists will be introduced. We will review the box model and they can practice how to use the margin and padding properties. Students will learn about the input element too. Week 6 - We will look at the form and the button element. Students can also practice everything they have learnt so far.
Learning Goals
In this class students will master the basic skills in HTML and CSS.

Parental Guidance
I am going to use repl.it (https://replit.com/~) which is good tool for a group to work on the same project. Students can see, modify and run the same source code. It is a safe site to use. Students need to register and I will invite them to my repl we use in the class. When registering, they should not use their last name for the username. I will only need to know their username. I won't see the email associated with the their account.
Supply List
Students need a computer or a laptop for the class. Internet connection is required too.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I would like to assist students to get knowledge in areas of Programming and Math. Students can build the foundation of programming with me. I can also help them solve intermediate and advanced coding problems. I will guid them on their projects as well. I have a passion for combining Math and Programming, for example solving Statistics in R or in Python, Math Olympiad and Algorithms in Python or in JavaScript.
I have over 10 years of experience in Programming. I have a Master's degree in Computer Science from Bonn, Germany. I have worked as an Android and Web Developer at Deep Look, inc. in Sunnyvale, California. I completed Elementary Statistics from West Valley College. I also completed Medical Statistics at Stanford University. Through all my studies and work I have gained expertise in programming languages like Python, R, Java, JavaScript and Scratch. I have made websites with HTML and CSS using Python and JavaScript based frameworks. I have also acquired a lot of experience in Math in High School in Hungary and during my first two years of study at the University of Bonn.
I strongly believe that in any area of expertise one needs to learn the basics first. It is necessary to have foundation before gaining deeper understanding and solving more complex problems. I can help students to learn foundational skills through lots of hands-on experience. I make lessons enjoyable by giving them interesting and challenging, but not difficult problems. After mastering the basics skills I can teach students how to solve problems by finding solutions more and more on their own: for example by combining what they have learned so far, or searching for programming knowledge on the web, which was not taught, but is needed for a solution. I think a lot of practice is important and beneficial at any level of the learning journey.
I have been teaching my son how to solve Math Olympiad problems since September of 2020. We also did some coding projects in Scratch in the last few years. Now he is learning Python with me. We have a lot of fun together. I also like hiking and being outdoors.
