This is the first semester of a two semester High School level Human Anatomy & Physiology course, however with a "SUPER" twist! This class includes engrossing assignments, “at home labs”, and fun projects where the students will create their very own superhumans and super powers! Using project based learning, this class will cover the standards of High School Life Science, based in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This course teaches in detail the structure and function of all of...
Here is a list of the learning topics. The goal is for each student to understand the anatomy and physiology of each system and how it relates to their individual life. Anatomy & Physiology of Superhumans (and Humans) Chemical Basis of Life The Cell, Cellular Metabolism & Division Organization of Tissues, Organs and Systems Integumentary System Skeletal System Muscular System Genetics and Inheritance Blood and Cardiovascular System Respiratory System The Nervous System & The Special Senses Lymphatic System and Immunology Digestive System, Metabolism, and Nutrition Urinary System Endocrine System NGSS Standard to be covered in these topics: Molecules to Organisms : Structures and Processes HS-LS1 Ecosystems: Energy, Interactions, & Dynamics HS-LS2 Heredity: Inheritance & Variation in Traits HS-LS3 Biological Evolution: Unity & Diversity HS-LS4
I have been a teacher in San Diego County for 25+ years for Charter School and home school students. I teach Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Human Anatomy, and much, much more! I work with Middle School and High School age students. I own and run a learning center in my home town that has been serving students for over 15 years. I am an approved vendors and considered an subject area expert for multiple charter schools in CA. I use creative methods to engage the students mind to learn through interesting and exciting thematic learning (Edu-LARP). I believe that we can cover the standards, but in a way that makes it memorable and makes connections to their own life and the world around them.
All homework, quizzes, and exams are optional based on the needs of the student and if they are enrolled in a charter school, homeschooled, or just learning to learn. Types of Assignments: • Weekly assignments and quizzes on past discussions • Midterm and Final Exam • AT HOME labs done with materials easily available at most grocery stores • Final Project Creating their own superhuman based on the science and the correlating assignments to complete it • Other creative projects to help solidify principles taught (for example Cellular Organelle "Superherofication" - If the _____ where a superhero, who would they be?)
1 file available upon enrollment• Science Notebook • For “AT HOME” labs (smock, protective gloves, and eye protection) • A complete list of materials for "AT Home" labs will be given when you register for the class
Each assignment turned in, will be graded. It is recommended that each student do all the assigned work. However, depending on your students schooling situation or learning abilities, any assignment can be altered. If you ask us for an overall grade, it will be based on the completed course. First semester grading: 40% Homework, 30% Labs, 20% Midterm, & 10% Quizzes. Second Semester grading: 30% Homework, 20% Labs, 20% Final Project, 20% Final Exam, & 10% Quizzes. Once again, any adjustments for your particular schooling needs can be made to meet the needs of your student.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
In the sections on Genetics and the Endocrine system, human reproduction will be discussed. This will be strictly scientific. It will be about how inheritance works and how the endocrine system works. This is not a “Health Class”. Sexual development and sexuality are NOT discussed, except where it pertains to Genetics and the Endocrine System. We keep all discussions family friendly.
