Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
In this one hour session, we will first establish a motivation for learning how to prove, its place in the building of mathematics, and some famous proofs like the Pythagorean Theorem. We will then work through simple proofs of algebraic equations to establish and understanding of the parts of a proof and their functions. We will then work on proofs of congruent triangles, creating proofs in flowchart, table, and paragraph format to see the connections across multiple representations. Students will be given a toolkit of common definitions and theorems used in proof, as well as some completed proofs for reference and ideas for further practice.
Learning Goals
Students will understand why proof is essential to mathematics.
Students will learn to construct proofs of algebraic equations and congruent triangles, using flowchart, table, and paragraph form.
