Have you ever carved a face on a pumpkin, and wondered why people do that? What about where it started? Come and learn about where the history of the jack-o-lantern began. Was it always a pumpkin? If not, what were they first made of? Why did people carve faces? This class will talk about the history of the jack-o-lantern and the Irish folklore of Stingy Jack, from which it is thought to have originated. I've been a life long Halloween celebrator, and interested in the history of the jack-o-lantern and where it came from.
This class will touch on the celebration of Halloween, and how it evolved from the Celtic celebration of Samhain, and how that was a time that it was believed that supernatural beings roamed the Earth. It will also talk about how jack-o-lanterns were lit to help ward off evil spirits. And Stingy Jack is described as a drunk and bad man, who made a deal with the devil.
