This is a six week course, covering chapters 7-12 of the text. Live weekly discussion of each chapter. A selection of videos and comprehension questions will be added weekly. This section can be used as a stand alone or ongoing study.
Class Experience
US Grade 6 - 9
Students will meet weekly to discuss the assigned reading/topic and any outside research they may have. This conversation will be largely driven by the chapter themes they found the most interesting. The teacher will act as a guide, asking thought provoking questions and balancing the conversations.
Students will leave with a greater appreciation of US History being told from the perspective of various marginalized groups. Chapter Titles for chapters 7-12 are: 7. As Long As Grass Grows or Water Runs 8. War With Mexico 9. Slavery And Emancipation 10. The Other Civil War 11. Robbers, Barons and Rebels 12. The American Empire

Homework Offered
Weekly comprehension questions and videos will be shared. These will aide in gaining a deeper understanding of the material covered.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will participate in weekly discussions lead by their particular interests in the chapter. Students may turn in weekly comprehension questions for checking.Grades Offered
The student needs a copy of the text "A Young People's History of The United States" by Howard Zinn. If reading is a challenge, please let me know and I will provide a link (no cost) to the book being read aloud on YouTube.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This text covers the history of the United States often from the perspective of the marginalized. Topics of racism, gender inequality, and the economically disadvantaged are discussed in depth.
